Contraband (1980)
Luca il contrabbandiere Douban
other title: 禁无可禁 / Luca il contrabbandiere
Here's another one outside the horror genre for director Lucio Fulci. He crafts a brutally biting, if disjointed Italian crime melodrama that serves to make you squirm in it gratuitous acts of extremely depraved violence and sleaziness. Fulci definitely left his calling card on this one, with many unforgettably unflinching nasty moments (like an uncomfortable face-melting scene). The superfluous gore and mean-spirited nature is great, but a lack of any real tension-building does hurt it. The twisty story is frank and unspectacular even with its shifty chain of bleak events and the script is weakly penned (the unsuitable humour when included falling flat), but being broken up by its impulsively vivid action stunts (nice use of slow-motion too) and gorgeous Naples' backdrop, leaves quite a hypnotic imprint. Sergio Salvati's brashly sharp and tight camera-work, interlocks with Fulci's kinetic visual bursts and rounding it off nicely is composer Fabio Frizzi's ever-changing, saucy music score that doesn't lye down. Performances are workably tailored. There's a humanely chiselled and honest performance by Fabio Testi. Marcel Bozuffi makes for a great smarmy, calculating French Mafia Don trying to take over Testi's character's turf. Ivana Monti, Ferdinand Murolo, Saverio Marconi and Guido Alberti provide able support. Quite an edgy, blunt and vicious crime joint that basically gets it kicks off its effectively rousing, if scandalous violence than anything more.

Syndicate Sadists (1975)
Il giustiziere sfida la città
other title: 胆包天 / Il giustiziere sfida la città …
Umberto Lenzi is undoubtedly the king of Italian crime movies, but unfortunately; Syndicate Sadists is not the best examples of his work in this genre. Lenzi's crime flicks tend to be a cut above the rest because he makes films based on stories with a point, and they don't lack direction; but this film feels a bit too wayward to fully fit with the rest of his stuff. The film takes obvious influence from Sergio Leone's landmark western 'A Fistful of Dollars' (which in turn, took influence from Akira Kurosawa's landmark samurai flick Yojimbo), in that it features two warring families and a strong character at the centre. The crime that Lenzi focuses on is kidnapping, and we centre on a character called 'Rambo'. Rambo is dragged into the war between the two families after his brother is killed because of it. Rambo uses his brains and brawn to pit the two families against one another, in the hope of gaining revenge for his brother's death, rescuing a young boy that they've kidnapped, and ultimately letting the two sides destroy one another. The film's biggest asset is undoubtedly Tomas Milian. Milian was put to great use by Lenzi in almost all of his crime thrillers. The range of characters he has played for Lenzi is immense, and this one is easily one of the coolest. The character is called Rambo, which immediately sprang to mind the popular Sylvester Stallone character - but for once, the Italians actually haven't stolen this name as Syndicate Sadists was released first! As usual, the film is wickedly entertaining, as we get to watch Milian get himself involved in the usual array of car chases, shootouts and brawls. Lenzi has got him riding a motorbike this time round, and every scene featuring it and Milian is a real standout! However, the film often feels like it doesn't really have anywhere to go, and this means that the running time is stretched out more than it should be. Compared to the crime films of other Italian directors, Syndicate Sadists is more than above average; but in relation to Lenzi crime flicks such as Almost Human and The Cynic, The Rat and The Fist - it doesn't stand tall as one of Lenzi's best. Still, if you're looking for ninety minutes of testosterone fuelled mayhem - Syndicate Sadists will suffice!

Hallucination Strip (1975)
Roma drogata: la polizia non può intervenire Douban
other title: 迷幻罗马:警方无法干预 / Roma drogata: la polizia non può intervenire …
The story is about a youth named Massimo Monaldi, who, living in Rome, is a part-time college student who has some involvement in the protests that occur at his university. Massimo is also involved with drugs and he sometimes steals to make a living and support his habit (the theft of a pill box is very important to the story, early on). Among his associates are his girlfriend, Cinzia, who comes from a wealthy family, and he has a wealthy male friend named Rudy who is very naive as well as strangely pampered by his doting mother. Both families don't approve of their relationship with Massimo. After the theft of the pill box from Cinzia's home (she's an accomplice), and after encountering a certain man, a mafioso-type wanted by the police, Massimo soon finds himself in trouble with the police. The man, who has some dealings in the drug trade, befriends Massimo, but this association brings about Massimo's downfall; first leading to a crisis regarding his girlfriend and his best friend, when they attend a drug party with him; then finding himself on the wrong end of his association with the mobster. Who, at the end of the film, will get to Massimo first: the police or the mobster? I found this film to be very weird and the plot a little disjointed, but interesting, especially as it's so obscure, and is very '70's-ish in the way it was filmed. It was a side of Roman youth culture I had never seen before. However, I felt that the director, Lucio Marcaccini, who it seems, fell off the face of the earth after this film, was a lousy director and didn't fully take advantage of the talent that he was working with. Maybe he was on something himself when he was making this film, as I began to feel that I would have done better directing this film myself! I also take to task the theme song, "We Got A Lord," which was also used in a love scene and at the closing credits. Its use in the film made absolutely no sense to me. However, I thoroughly enjoyed Bud Cort as Massimo Monaldi, which I thought was a welcome change from the "crazy, demented youth" roles he had been given around the time he did "Harold and Maude". I have read that he took off a few years from acting after that film because of the typecasting he was going through. I am sure that this is the first film he did when he returned from his acting hiatus. In "Roma Drogata" he was allowed to be more versatile as a leading man: he was sometimes romantic; sometimes cool and crafty; sometimes naive; sometimes sweet and romantic; or sexy and intense in the role. I wish that he had been given a chance to do more roles like this one! I also enjoyed Marcel Bozzuffi, best known in this country as the hit man, Pierre Nicoli in "The French Connection," who played the police inspector.
