本片在内容上与传统的警匪片大异其趣。在形式上，此片亦放弃了紧张火爆的感官刺激，改以亲切自然加上人情味的喜剧风格来取悦观众。两位男主角廖伟雄和郑则仕都是电视出身的谐角，导演罗文将小市民意识套入了警察电影之中，将警察的英雄形象拉低变成凡人，同时以大量的篇幅讽刺香港社会的现像，像这种模样的警察喜剧，在港产电影中前所未见。

四十年代，青年丘子洪欲乾一番事业，故往上海发展，到上海认识到君、川两人，后往同乡勇兄妹处，以作打算。斧头帮之金九笔为歌星莉与杜老大冲突，金河帮姜老大亦介入，最后杜终被杀。警察局长康介绍洪到姜之赌场，洪因表现佳，后智退金而更被重用。因川被杀，康助洪杀金，却因此而使姜、洪关系恶化，却更欲杀勇、洪等人，却反被勇所杀，姜手下元武誓杀洪、勇。此等仇杀背后原来藏着康欲雄霸上海之阴谋，最后勇及其余党皆被杀，唯洪逃脱，洪亦知悉康之一切，故誓杀康，替勇报仇。经过一次次血雨腥风的洗礼后，他意识到，要在这个勾斗角、弱肉强食的社会中雄霸天下并非易事，但此时退出已经太晚了……

年青干探傅世亨为人正直、寡言、与当舞女的可儿谈恋爱，二人感情甚笃。一次，世亨拘留黑帮分子阿威时，不慎被犯人逃脱。警方与廉政公署怀疑世亨协助犯人逃走，世亨被迫停职待查。世亨同父异母的黑帮兄长世滔救弟心切，四出找寻阿威下落，不幸被阿威打死。世亨悲愤交杂，誓要捉拿逃犯归案。不料，世亨被阿威打至重伤，不省人事。可儿在慌忙中枪杀阿威，替世亨报仇。此时，大批警员已在他们殴斗现场戒备，最后，可儿独力承担杀人罪名，向警方自首。

In ancient China, a demon was defeated in a fierce battle with a priest, who sealed it's evil spirit in a vase. Centuries later, during the cultural revolution, rebels attempted to gain possession of the vessel from the priest's descendant; however, he threw it into the ocean to keep it from being tampered. The vase was recovered years later in Hong Kong and was auctioned off to a councilman. The demon, unfortunately, escaped and took control of the councilman's body, beginning a spree of terror in the city.

琳琳（关之琳 饰）和男友麦克（陶大宇 饰）交往了七年，因为琳琳生性害羞保守，所以两人至始至终都没有实质性的进展，麦克心中因此十分郁闷，最终，他提出了分手。一场意外让琳琳和名为阿华（刘德华 饰）的男子相识了，过往的伤痛让琳琳决心做出改变，于是趁着醉意勾引阿华，可是，她心中惦念的却依旧是麦克。
阴差阳错之下，阿华被琳琳的家人误以为两人正在交往，受琳琳所托，麦克假扮琳琳的男友，希望以此能够挽回麦克的心，而彼时麦克的身边已经有了另一位新人。随着时间的推移，阿华的琳琳假戏真做，彼此之间产生了真挚的感情，徘徊在两个男人之间，琳琳不知该如何选择。

Sergeant Kwok Wah (Andy Lau) and Ho Lung (Ray Lui) are both colleagues and best friends. Ho Lung has developed hatred with a gang leader Dick. Dick sends Hung (Cherie Chung) as a bait to kill Ho Lung. Swore to take revenge for his best friend, Kwok Wah works with Ho Lung's partner Mother (Kent Cheng) to unveil the enemy. Kwok Wah saves Hung during an operation and Hung starts to like Kwok Wah. Kwok Wah and Mother follow their plan to capture Dick, but it ends in vain and both of them get into a gunfight. Hung is killed for saving Kwok Wah during the gunfight. Though heart-broken, Kwok Wah and Mother go on fighting the villain...

A water-phobic teacher is saved by a mermaid and accidentally swallows her magical pearl, trapping her on land. She enrolls in his school to retrieve it, and they fall in love, but their romance is threatened when the school principal uncovers her secret.

港生（王祖贤 饰）从大陆偷渡至香港，一路颠簸还被蛇头欺辱，搏斗过程中将蛇头打伤才逃脱出来，但外面的世界同样令她感到陌生惶恐。她起初预备投靠自己的姨妈，却遭到姨妈拒绝且冷言讽刺港生，而姨父则垂涎其美色，港生只得离开姨妈家再次流落街头。督查何定邦（周润发 饰）和祥仁（吕方 饰）追捕白粉雄，白粉雄驾车冲出街道撞倒了路边的港生。港生在医院苏醒以后害怕身份败露被送回大陆，灵机一动谎称自己脑部受伤得了失忆症，还“认准”何定邦就是其丈夫伟雄。心性善良的定邦只得将港生接回家中暂住，二人关系日渐改变，但港生“偷渡客”的身份却像两人关系中的定时炸弹时时刻刻存在着……

Kung Fu Scholar is a comedy action starring Dicky Cheung. He wants to learn kung-fu, but his mother wants him to go to school. After losing a game with his mother, he's forced to attend school. Liu Sin-Hoi (Aaron Kwok) also attends the same school. The school's headmaster (Mau Tat) has a niece Ching Ching (Chow Wai Man) who's also been dropped off at the school by her parents. School has many regulations: One being you cannot court a woman. But guess what, it's love at first sight for Man Chui (Dicky Cheung) when he sees Ching Ching. There's a band of henchmen after prince eight, and Man Chui and Sin-Hoi gets entangled in their affairs.
