A simple story of the life and love of a woman who lost her lover at the front. After a failed marriage and many years of loneliness, she finally finds happiness by meeting a man who is not only ready to become her companion, but also a friend to her adult son.

The film tells about two elderly widows who live in the same house. They are united not only by tragedy, but also by common concern, namely the grave of two unknown soldiers, which they have been guarding for over 30 years. And suddenly the managers of their district decide to turn the grave into a memorial.

The film depicts three important episodes in the life of Fridtjof Nansen (Wigert): his North Pole expedition, his diplomatic work with the League of Nations and his humanitarian work during the 1930s famine in Ukraine.
