位于宇都宫的一户人家，居住著一位历经明治、大正、昭和以及平成四个时代的耄耋老人——柴田丰婆婆（八千草薰 饰）。丰婆婆的丈夫贞吉（铃木瑞穗 饰）早年过世，她一人独居，虽然会感到寂寞，不过每天细心打理这栋充满回忆的老宅依然会为婆婆带来充满温暖怡人的快乐。只是丰婆婆心中仍有所挂念，那就是她的独生子健一（武田铁矢 饰）。健一人很善良，可就是脾气急躁，都六十岁的人了工作始终没有长性，经常打著找工作的旗号跑去单车竞技赛场小赌一番，衣食起居全靠和善的妻子静子（伊藤兰 饰）一人操持。 2006年的一天晚上，丰婆婆不小心从床上滑下来，在地板上睡了一夜。事后在诊疗所监察室，上条医生（上地雄辅 饰）发现婆婆的眼睛有所异常。静子分外担心，请求婆婆和他们住到一起，但被婆婆微笑地拒绝了。之后不久，丰婆婆接受青光眼手术，而手术当天健一的身影却并未在医院出现。当晚在与妻子的争执中，健一甚至脱口而出希望妈妈早死的话来，事后他由此陷入深深的悔恨之中。 婆婆的手术非常成功，只是她暂时无法像往常一样散步行走，于是整个人也显得郁郁寡欢，没有精神。丰婆婆的落寞被健一夫妇看在眼里，心中自然也分外焦急。适值此时，健一偶然从报纸上看到一则诗歌征稿启事，他顿时有了灵感，希望妈妈可以尝试写诗抒发胸臆，忘掉当前的烦恼。在儿子的鼓励和指导下，丰婆婆拿起了手中笔，记录下四季变换时的刹那美好。她的心情日渐开朗，而如泉水般流淌的笔触也将思绪带回往昔的回忆当中。曾经一家三口的幸福场景、战争年代相互扶持的温暖、孩童时为还债而卖力劳作的艰辛，记忆中的点点滴滴全部化作文字呈现在纸上。丰婆婆的真情流露也同样感染著周围的人，健一、静子、上条医生等等，他们似乎借著诗歌之光的指引找到前行的方向，纵使前方千山万水、困难重重……

昭和二三年、ＧＨＱ民政局次長チャールズ・ケージスは新内閣を野党第一党・民主自由党を中心とした連立内閣とすることを要望し、総理大臣には民自党幹事長・山崎猛が望ましいと伝えた。しかし、党長老・松野鶴平の強引な奇策、吉田の側近・林譲治の必死の巻きかえし、さらに党総務会における一年生議員・田中角栄の大胆な発言などによって形勢は逆転し、一〇月一五日第二次吉田内閣が成立した。吉田は、みずからの勢力を拡大するため議会の解散をはかり、翌二四年選挙において民自党は圧勝、この時以来吉田学校と呼ばれるようになる吉田派は大量の新議員を誕生させる。二月一六日、第三次吉田内閣が発足した。吉田はまず平和条約草案の作成のために外務次官太田一郎を中心とするプロジェクトチームを極秘で結成、太田らは血のにじむ苦難の末、吉田の要求に答える草案を作り上げた。続いて再びマッカーサーと会見、池田勇人、宮沢喜一の渡米許可をとりつけた。二人の渡米の表向きの目的は、アメリカの財政・経済の視察であったが、吉田が二人に託した密命はしかるべき人物を捜し出して、対日講和の下打合せをしておこうというものである。二人は国務省ドッジ公使と接触することによって役割りを果した。二六年朝鮮戦争が勃発した。消沈する吉田のもとにＧＨＱからダレス国務長官顧問の面会要請の連絡が入る。ダレスは吉田に早期講和に賛成する旨を告げたが、付帯条件として日本の再軍備を出した。吉田は断腸の思いで警察予備隊の設置を認めた。政敵・鳩山一郎の追放解除にともない謀将・三木武吉を中心とする鳩山派の動きが日増しにその不気味さを増し、アメリカが執拗に日本の再軍備を要求するなか、吉田学校のメンバーは九月八日、遂に対日平和条約調印を実現させた。それは日米安保条約とともに結ばれたものであった。対日講和が調印され日本国内は新しい政治局面へ向って動き始め、吉田自身には鳩山・三木との宿命の対決が待っていた。
