His proper debut album, Aromanticism is a concept album about lovelessness as a sonic dreamscape. It seeks to interrogate the social constructions around romance. The debut will include the devastating, billowing synths of "Doomed,” which in a way serves as the album’s thesis statement, as well as new versions of standouts "Lonely World" and "Plastic.” It’s a deliberate, jaw-dropping statement that can leave you both enlightened and empty.

Swedish soul outfit Little Dragon have called upon Moses Sumney to help with the new song “The Other Lover”. The track is a reimagining of “Another Lover” from Little Dragon’s March album, New Me, Same Us.
Compared to its original form, “The Other Lover” has been pared back, with muted synths instead of a thumping bass, less percussion, and fresh horn accents. Sumney’s voice is as gorgeous as ever, and he and vocalist Yukimi Nagano find a delicate blend of their inimitable tones. “When we reached out to Moses we didn’t know what to expect,” Little Dragon wrote in a statement. “What we received was very stripped down, with his beautiful voice. We jammed along and sent it back. It bounced back from his end with added horns and sounded beautiful to our ears. We are very proud of this.”
Sumney added that, “I’ve been listening to Little Dragon for a very long time; as a teen, their first album impressed upon me just how infinite modern soul music can be.” He added, “When they asked me to collaborate I was so honored and surprised (“shook,” as the kids say), that it took me a while to come around. They worked with me, egoless, to craft a new vision for their song. I’m proud of what we came up with.”
Earlier this year, Sumney released the ambitious double album græ. He recently collaborated with Jónsi on Trayer Tryon’s track “cul de sac”, and branched out into directing with the video for Sylvan Esso’s “Frequency”.

We’ve heard a handful of tracks from it already — “Virile,” “Polly,” and “Me In 20 Years” — and today Sumney is sharing another one, “Cut Me,” which comes from the first part of græ.
It opens with a rubbery guitar line that gradually opens up into warm saxophone, hummed-out melodies, little piano plinks. It’s as intricately constructed as you’d expect from Sumney — the influence of his one-time tourmates Dirty Projectors really jumps out on this one. “A stiffness inside my neck/ Banging my head against the desk,” Sumney sings, his voice silky smooth. “If there’s no pain, is there any progress?/ That’s when I feel most alive/ Endurance is the source of my pride.”

After the first part of the album arrived earlier this year, Moses Sumney’s full new album græ arrives this Friday (May 15) via Jagjaguwar. Today, Sumney shared a new song from the album.
The album features “Virile,” “Polly,” “Me in 20 Years,” and “Cut Me,” which were all previously released. “Cut Me” recently got a new music video, and prior to the pandemic forcing the show into all remote broadcasts, he performed the song on Colbert. Sumney issued his full-length debut Aromanticism* in 2017.

When Moses Sumney first played Daniel Lopatin a demo of <I>græ</I> highlight “Me in 20 Years,” the song was still “wordless,” Sumney tells Apple Music. “Me singing at the top of my lungs and range.” In response, Lopatin told the Ghanaian American singer-songwriter that what he’d just heard “sounded like an old lady screaming to herself in the middle of a Whole Foods,” Sumney says. “I realized then and there that that is my brand.” While the final recording doesn’t quite fit Lopatin’s description, that’s very much the point: Sumney wholeheartedly resists classification, as does <I>græ</I>, a monumental double LP that, as its title suggests, revels in the in-between. Executive produced by Sumney, the project’s influences are as varied as its collaborators—a group that includes Lopatin, John Congleton, YVETTE, Thundercat, James Blake, Tom Gallo, Jill Scott, FKJ, Rob Moose, Ian Chang, Michael Chabon, Michaela Coel, and Adult Jazz. The only constant is Sumney’s voice, an instrument that can change altitude and shape from one moment to the next as it wraps around meditations on gender (“Virile,” “jill/jack”) and identity (“Neither/Nor”), age (“Me in 20 Years”) and intimacy (“Bless Me”). On closer “before you go,” he offers no easy conclusion: “What does love mean?” British American writer Taiye Selasi—who can also be heard speaking to personal multiplicity on “also also also and and and”—says, through a mist of echoing guitars and Sumney’s falsetto. “I don’t know.”
