Visuell imposant, hintergründig und bewegend erzählt der österreichische Hollywood-Regisseur Robert Dornhelm von der Verwirklichung eines Menschheitstraums: die Eroberung des K2. Ungeachtet der vielen Leben, die seine Begehung bereits gekostet hat, wagt eine Expedition aus zwölf Alpinisten Anfang der 1950er Jahre erneut die riskante Erstbesteigung. Der K2 ist der zweithöchste Berg der Welt und wegen seiner langen Steilwände mit Recht gefürchtet. Dennoch ist der Ansturm an Bewerbern groß, als im Jahr 1953 publik wird, dass die italienische Regierung eine Erstbesteigung finanzieren will. Genommen werden nur die Allerbesten. Vom Basislager in Pakistan aus will die bunt zusammengewürfelte Gruppe aus zwölf Individualisten den schwierigen Achttausender in einem gemeinsamen Kraftakt bezwingen. Am Ende aber erreichen nur zwei von ihnen tatsächlich den Gipfel. Unvorstellbare Höllenqualen liegen hinter ihnen.

Will stopping and listening to one another in order to try and save their relationships really be worth it, at the end of the day?
