Sexuality in China [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Howard Chiang publishing house: University of Washington Press 2018 - 7
What was sex like in China, from imperial times through the post-Mao era? The answer depends, of course, on who was having sex, where they were located in time and place, and what kind of familial, social, and political structures they participated in. This collection offers a variety of perspectives by addressing diverse topics such as polygamy, pornography, free love, eugenics, sexology, crimes of passion, homosexuality, intersexuality, transsexuality, masculine anxiety, sex work, and HIV/AIDS. Following a loose chronological sequence, the chapters examine revealing historical moments in which human desire and power dynamics came into play. Collectively, the contributors undertake a necessary historiographic intervention by reconsidering Western categorizations and exploring Chinese understandings of sexuality and erotic orientation.
After Eunuchs [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Howard Chiang publishing house: Columbia University Press 2018 - 6
For much of Chinese history, the eunuch stood out as an exceptional figure at the margins of gender categories. Amid the disintegration of the Qing Empire, men and women in China began to understand their differences in terms of modern scientific knowledge. In After Eunuchs, Howard Chiang traces the genealogy of sexual knowledge from the demise of eunuchism to the emergence of transsexuality, showing the rise of new epistemic structures to be central to the formation of Chinese modernity.
From anticastration discourses in the late Qing era to sex-reassignment surgeries in Taiwan in the 1950s and queer movements in the 1980s and 1990s, After Eunuchs explores the ways the introduction of Western biomedical sciences transformed normative meanings of gender, sexuality, and the body in China. Chiang investigates how competing definitions of sex circulated in science, medicine, vernacular culture, and the periodical press, bringing to light a rich and vibrant discourse of sex change in the first half of the twentieth century. He focuses on the stories of gender and sexual minorities themselves, as well as a large supporting cast of doctors, scientists, philosophers, educators, reformers, journalists, and tabloid writers, as they debated the questions of political sovereignty, national belonging, cultural authenticity, scientific modernity, human difference, and the power and authority of truths about sex. Theoretically sophisticated and far-reaching, After Eunuchs is an innovative contribution to the history and philosophy of science and queer and Sinophone studies.
Transtopia in the Sinophone Pacific [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Howard Chiang publishing house: Columbia University Press 2021 - 4
As a broad category of identity, “transgender” has given life to a vibrant field of academic research since the 1990s. Yet the Western origins of the field have tended to limit its cross-cultural scope. Howard Chiang proposes a new paradigm for doing transgender history in which geopolitics assumes central importance. Defined as the antidote to transphobia, transtopia challenges a minoritarian view of transgender experience and makes room for the variability of transness on a historical continuum.
Against the backdrop of the Sinophone Pacific, Chiang argues that the concept of transgender identity must be rethought beyond a purely Western frame. At the same time, he challenges China-centrism in the study of East Asian gender and sexual configurations. Chiang brings Sinophone studies to bear on trans theory to deconstruct the ways in which sexual normativity and Chinese imperialism have been produced through one another. Grounded in an eclectic range of sources—from the archives of sexology to press reports of intersexuality, films about castration, and records of social activism—this book reorients anti-transphobic inquiry at the crossroads of area studies, medical humanities, and queer theory. Timely and provocative, Transtopia in the Sinophone Pacific highlights the urgency of interdisciplinary knowledge in debates over the promise and future of human diversity.
Transgender China [图书] 豆瓣 Goodreads
作者: Howard Chiang publishing house: Palgrave Macmillan 2012 - 12 其它标题: Transgender China
In the emerging field of queer Asian studies, scholars to date have paid scant attention to transgender issues. Meanwhile, despite its already sophisticated focus on gender non-conformity, Western queer studies exhibits an equally pressing problem: the conspicuous absence of empirical and theoretical investigations of transgenderism in Northeast Asian society and culture. This volume, under the editorship of Howard Chiang, responds to the convergence of these limitations. By bringing together experts with diverse disciplinary backgrounds in the China field, from cultural studies to history to musicology, Transgender China makes a timely intervention whereby emergent Sinologists explore previously untapped terrains—from the historical demise of enuchism to male cross-dressing shows in contemporary Taiwan—to inaugurate a subfield in Chinese transgender studies.

Queer Sinophone Cultures [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Howard Chiang / Ari Larissa Heinrich publishing house: Routledge 2013 - 11
"Sinophone" cultures, a theoretical framework pioneered by the scholar Shu-mei Shih as a long-overdue alternative to the discourses of "Chinese" and "Chinese diaspora" that have traditionally defined Chinese Studies, has taken the field by storm, providing a rich theoretical rubric for examining the diverse origins and audiences for cultural production related to Chinese peoples and communities worldwide. Yet to date, none of the many ensuing critical discussions of "Sinophonicity" have addressed its interplay with Queer Studies. This book provides a timely theoretical exposition of where the liminal spheres of Queer Studies and Chinese Studies overlap. By bringing together in one volume examples of cutting-edge scholarship that directly address the intersections of the Sinophone and the "Queer," this volume breaks new conceptual and methodological ground while providing a crucial interdisciplinary forum beyond the traditional frameworks of national and ethnic communities that continue to define the disciplinary contours of East Asian Studies and, to some degree, Queer Studies.
