Anne and Pierre work in the same company, they date but do not consider a long-term relationship until Anne learns that she is expecting a child. Having already had an abortion, she fears repeating the experience, so Pierre proposes to marry her.

Simone and Jean have just married and, looking for a home in the Paris region, are lucky enough to find a house with a garden in a residential suburb. Expecting their first child, the young couple began to observe how the parents of neighboring families were raising theirs.

Four generations of Oppenheim men gather in Paris for Isaac's 90th birthday. Against a backdrop of Elie's attempts to call his ex-wife, Ben and Peggy's marital difficulties, Mathias's budding sexuality, everyone's love of chess and practical jokes, Ben's house (shifting dangerously on its foundation), and the twentieth-century struggles of the Jews, the film explores their relationships and Isaac's aging.

Sylvie, Corinne and Sophie all live in the same accommodation in Paris. The first sells clothes on the steps. The second works in a factory restaurant and the third is divorced, has a child and does odd jobs.

An apocalyptic vision of man after a cosmic catastrophe, this film is a terrifying metaphor of a dehumanized future. The Brazilian Cinema Novo, German expressionism of the twenties, and the ideologically motivated ‘cruelty’ of a Buñuel come together in this ferocious work of a French theatre collective – an ambitious, almost completely successful example of visual cinema at its best.
