1964年，玫瑰（陈冲 饰）是夜总会里当红的歌手，结识了澳洲水手比尔（斯帝温•威德勒 饰），带着儿子Tom（骆佳炜 饰）、女儿May随比尔移民到澳洲去。不久与比尔分手后，她继续留在澳洲，周旋在不同的男人身边。数年后，玫瑰与比尔复合，比尔却要继续水手的工作。不甘寂寞的玫瑰恋上了华人餐厅中的年轻厨师Joe（戚玉武 饰）。
玫瑰带着儿女离开了比尔的房子，与Joe同居了。可是Joe很快对养活玫瑰三母子的重任感到了压力，两人关系僵化，玫瑰崩溃。更不堪的是玫瑰16岁的女儿May与Joe恋上了，玫瑰深感震惊……
而玫瑰的儿子Tom把母亲经历的这一切看在眼里。
