Germany under Napoleon. Johanna is travelling by stagecoach when one of its occupants, Major Korfes, is arrested by the French militia. Before capture, he gives Johanna a mysterious letter. To solve the mystery, she joins the German corps as the “Black Hunter”. Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Richard Strauss’s popular stage production was adapted for the screen by CALIGARI director Robert Wiene in 1925. The reconstruction of the film undertaken by the Filmarchiv Austria together with ZDF/arte is the first to take the original score into account. The result was a much celebrated restaging of DER ROSENKAVALIER on 6th September 2006 in Dresden’s Semperoper, and it is now being presented to audiences here in Vienna.
