Overview

This lecture discusses key ideas from the modern Epicurean and freethinker philosopher, courtesan, and writer Ninon de l'Enclos' Letters to Marquis de Sévigné, a work whose authenticity scholarship is divided upon, but which certainly seems reflective of her viewpoints.

Specifically, it discusses the real nature of love, according to l'Enclos, which is a passion produced by the psychical mechanism of our body, involving and meeting certain emotional needs of the human heart. She counsels the young marquis against spiritualizing or sublimizing love into something different than it actually is, for example considering it to be a virtue.
