Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)

🎵 🎶🎵 🎹 Holy shit, that was Francois Truffaut?! (then, I'm sure I didn't know who that was, whenever I first saw this in my teens. ) I felt a pang of nostalgia, watching in 2025, for the idea that the US government would be a respected and competent leader for something as internationally important as an effort to make contact with an alien race. Though.. I was left with the distinct impression at the end of the film that it's not the first time this has happened. I saw this from the front row in 70mm and that was just about ideal. If you must watch at home, please wear headphones, the sound is almost as important as the visual, up to the earth and theater shaking thrum of the landing at Devil's Tower, Wyoming. On the way there, I love all the small comic ways that Spielberg finds to indicate that, indeed, weird shit is afoot. Floodlights, self unscrewing floor vents, and so on. The ship effects are still amazing, but it's a good thing that we only briefly see those alien costumes
