The game leaves a very strong first impression, but soon comes the realization that it's a one-trick pony

First of all, I'm mixed about the graphics. On one hand, the sprites look amazing. The detail and framerate on them makes them really come alive. But aesthetically it has that fake nostalgia vaporwave vibe that's been overdone in the last decade and a half. Idk who gave people the idea that the 80s were all purple. And there's no visual variety in the environments because it's all just corridors. It's like we haven't progressed from Wolfenstein 3D at all, which brings me to my second point.

This gameplay is very repetitive. All you do is go through very linear narrow tunnels and murder enemies. While the animations do make the kills feel very satisfying, after 20 minutes you've pretty much seen them all. And the only gimmick that really holds this game together is the timer. You have to keep killing enemies not to die. It's like Speed, except instead of a bus, it's you. I'm not a fan of this feature because I like to explore the world and take in the atmosphere. And the game does let you turn it off, but warns that the game wasn't designed to be played without it. And true enough, without the timer all the game's flaws come to the surface. It's strange that they call that mode "boomer shooter" because it plays nothing like one. In fact, it's almost the opposite of a boomer shooter. This game has more in common with something like Hotline Miami, except less strategic. In boomer shooters, such as Quake, getting a rail gun meant a game of cat and mouse would ensue, where you would use the environment to hide and only come out for quick single shots. Here such a possibility doesn't exist because there's nothing in the environment that you could use for hiding or maneuvers. It's all just straight lines, with occasional platforms. It's not a game about hiding or thinking anyway. It's a game about moving forward at fast speeds and making split-second decisions on who to attack first and how, and then watching an anime lady scream at you.

If you're into speed-running it will probably be fun, but as an old school shooter it's too basic.
