How would you improve upon the current state of portable computers?

I need to figure out how I can set up a self-hosted system to sell my documentary The Illusionists.

Sure, I could host it on PeerTube and add all kinds of foreign language subtitles there... but I need a solution to generate unique URLs for everyone who purchases a 48-hour streaming license... all this to avoid piracy of course.

Yes I know the Fediverse loves 🏴‍☠️ but how can we independent filmmakers survive?

I've been using a mainstream platform to sell my film and they have just been bought by an infamous company, so I want to decamp ASAP.

I would love your suggestions.

And no, services that offer to sell digital products won't work because it's a 90 minute film that requires subtitles for many so the viewer needs to see it on an online platform that displays subtitles.

#askfedi What is the best oldschool #forum software one can self-host on a small server?

"Best" as in some tradeoff of the following:

* bugfree (or not many bugs)
* safe, as in no or no discovered CVEs
* features for users, mods and admins
* maintainability
* safe, as in allows invite-only, and maybe review posts before being actually visible

Background is, that I have been thinking about hosting one for a long time, but it would probably be only for friends and friends of friends.

When you write a thread of toots on #Mastodon, how do you it?

(I make the original toot, then have to navigate to find it, then hit “reply”. Rinse and repeat. It’s a bit clunky; I am hoping for a smoother way.)

Not sure how to triangulate on the problem, but for the last two days I've not been able to upload images to pixelfed.art from my phone.

Yesterday's sketch had to wait for me to turn on the laptop and use that instead.

Anyone having similar issues?
(I'm using Tusky at present)

Is anybody running a multi-user computer setup? If so, what does your partition setup look like?

I'm trying to figure out what works best, because I want an area with shared files (not a network share), while keeping the encrypted disk at boot.

We already have an encrypted disk with keys for each of us, and I'm installing a new drive to expand storage.

A question for the Fedi Hivemind:

There's a webcomic I can't remember the name of. x__x I remember coming across it in the mid-late 2000s. It was bright and cartoony and very well drawn; I remember it being hilarious, actual laughing out loud kind of thing. It was short, though, and unfinished.

It took place in a high school, followed a number of different characters. In particular, I remember one of the teachers, a rather nerdy guy, selling his soul to the devil because he was so fed up with the kids or something, and becoming a devil himself; he grew large horns and gained more of a devil-like temper. There was also a rooster? I think? Anyway... hell and fire were some of the major themes.

I know it's not much to go on... I remember it so well, even if I can't remember details or the name of it. Anyone have any ideas what it could have been?

Umm, I'm pretty sure this supposed #Mastodon admin asking me to verify my account is fake, but just to concur with yall around here, that's unofficial and fake right?

Asking Fedi.

Could you help me find pieces of art, especially video pieces about autism from the perspective of the autistic person? Ideally, made by autistic artists or filmmakers. Preferably short films but any other kind of art piece would be welcome too.

I edit to add: I'm asking because one of my final project students, who is autistic, is planning to do a video about his autism and how he experiences it. I wanted to send him some previous works, for inspiration or as examples.

Anything helps! Boosts OK.

#askfedi I'm looking for a UK based photo printing service who won't feed my photos to the techbros. I've been digging through privacy policies on a few sites and am more confused than when I started 😖 The photos aren't anything special, day-to-day stuff that I want to send to friends and family because I want to try a more analogue approach.

Do you think Loops will pass TikToks Portability API rules?

i am once again asking if there is one (1) single solitary GUI static site generator aside from Publii

as in, you can install the program and end up with, like, a folder of static HTML, without ever having to type something into a terminal

(web-based is ok too)

RE: https://mastodon.social/@dansup/116154878377387571

I think we should limit starter kit creation to accounts that are older than 90 days, segment max # of kits per user based on follower count, and limit the # of accounts they can add to each kit based on their follower count.

I could be wrong, and want your feedback on these kit rate limits please!

What’s your favorite 120 film? I want to try a few.

I’ve only ever shot Ilford HP5+ 400 on 120.

On 35mm I’ve done that one, I love portra, I love the phoenixes. All recommendations welcome

To celebrate my instance limits going back to normal, I have a poll for y'all.

This is going to be about #biting in the context of play.

Select statements that hold true for you.

If you would like to expand on your answers, or add your perspectives and experiences to my dataset, please add a response. If you want it to remain private you may make it a "mentioned-only" response.

I need people who had a small event, hackathon, conference that require digital recognition to try badgefed and give feedback. I want to ace the UX experience.

Send them my way, they can register here, and ping me and I will enable a full account.

Any #Plan9 or #9front expert on fedi? I heard a lot about it and few days ago when I spotted a new release of the 9front and there was #qcow2 #QEMU images, I started to look at it. However I never get the #rio #GUI session to work. I am starting the #VM by:

qemu-system-x86_64 \
    -machine q35 -enable-kvm \
    -m 2g -cpu host \
     -vga std \
    -drive "media=disk,if=virtio,file=$HOME/Downloads/9front-11952.amd64.qcow2" \
    -netdev user,id=vioif0,hostfwd=tcp::5699-:22 \
    -device virtio-net-pci,netdev=vioif0 \
    -no-reboot \
    -daemonize

my host system is #Debian #Linux running on #X11. The error message after login with glenda was not very informative though:

hjfs: fs is /dev/sd00/fs
