This took me the whole year to read but that's a reflection of how much time I could find rather than the quality of the book. The writing is sometimes a bit arch and po-faced (but I've been on a Joe Abercrombie kick so everything is by comparison), but it's great. Full of intrigue, queers, and dragons, wyrms, and wyverns. What's not to like?

I missed out on the books when I was growing up (reading lots of Discworld instead) but loved the films, so I'm reading them now as an adult (read the first one last year).<br><br>This was unabashedly a children's book. The sentences are short and simple, the characters maybe 2 and a half dimensions at most, and the plot unfolds quite simply. <br><br>However, it's a great children's book! The simplicity of the writing means there's lots of space for the setting to be brought to life, and it's a fun read.<br><br>I'm looking forward to when my kids are big enough to read it too.
