Duck Creek is sort of like a fictionalized Whitefish, MT, with a refugee program like the one that exists in nearby(ish) Missoula. And unfortunately like the Whitefish/Kalispell area, it has a white supremacist problem. Trouble is, our protagonist doesn't ever fully realize she's guilty of her own racist assumptions at the beginning of the book. Sure, she eventually figures out that she was badly doing her job as a public defender, and sure she's got a Black coworker who very patiently endures her ignorance, but of course everything works out for her in the end, and she only has to complete most of a personal reckoning. Don't strain yourself digging too deep, girl!

I was interested in seeing how the story shook out, and the writing style reminded me of other mysteries I've liked, and I'm not sorry I read it, but I didn't find enough compelling about Julia to want to read another book with her at the forefront. Your mileage may vary!

Rated The War Master: Anti-Genesis 10/10
Loved this bit of the Master being a bit overambitious, even for him. Nice way to show how the Time War was basically a mess.

My first Poirot! Which is funny because this is a late-career Poirot, but somewhere along the way I acquired the audiobook and had forgotten about it until now. I sort of had an idea of who did it, but not the way that it happened. Enjoyed this.

Rated All My Puny Sorrows 10/10

Outstandingly great. Funny, sad, a wonderful, complicated family of weirdos (affectionate) trying to figure out how (or if) they want to live. This is one of those 5 star books where I recommend just reading it, and otherwise, I don't have a lot to say besides I loved it.

TW: for discussion of suicide, of course, and I guess if you were/are Mennonite, some of this may bring up some feelings. Then again, this is Miriam Toews. If you're Mennonite, you know what her whole deal is.... but if you are in the headspace for all that, get thee to a library/bookstore.

A details-packed book of poetry about that great love while young, that could have worked in another universe.

Very much enjoyed this, probably more so because it is a stretch of road with which I am familiar. A book full of grieving, realistically messy people (though the book is not one I'd call a tearjerker at all), doing the best they can, even when the best they can might be a poor decision anyway.
