Rated Moederland 8/10

I am Dutch, but I have no - and never had - people from Curaçao (or with that heritage) in my social circle. So I started reading with a pretty blank slate on a personal level. The author has a really raw style, but I quite liked it and it was easy to follow along. Some passages are very poetic and I really enjoyed those.

Very impressive story and personal history of both the author and her mother.

One of the things I love about reading is that a lot is left to the imagination of the reader. That way whole visual worlds are created in my mind. Some authors often leave gaps for the reader’s imagination to fill.
This books leaves the gaps a little too wide for me. That in combination with quite philosophical and poetic prose made this not what it could have been. I can see though why lots of people highly rate it. Just not for me though.

Rated The Darkest Road 10/10

As with all books in this trilogy it took me a bit to get into it. I don’t know why because I had just finished the previous part a few days prior. I suppose every book in this trilogy needed a built-up.
Once that built-up was completed and the book got going, it was hard to put down.

And what a beautifully written ending to this wonderful trilogy.

At times it was great, particularly the second part. This view on suffering and death as part of the human experience was interesting as well. But all in all, I was still somewhat happy when I finished it.

It was fun reading about cyclists that were active before I started watching cycling races. Very well written, where the author just lets the cyclists ramble on.

Quite enjoyed this, even though the jumping between antagonists often felt like too much of a disruption. Each character could have its own full blown book.
