Question of the Day: How many books are you currently in the middle of reading? #bookstodon

Just a quick reminder...

If you’ve read my book, 'Drystone - A Life Rebuilt' I’d be grateful if you left a review wherever you prefer.

This isn’t a plea for 5 star ratings; it’s a request for honesty. Books are personal: I dislike plenty, feel neutral about many, and love a few. Whatever your response, reviews really help. A wall of 5-stars is wonderful, but it can also feel suspicious to readers. A mix of perspectives shows the book is being read seriously.

#Books #Bookstodon #Reading

Are there any book clubs on Mastodon? The in-person ones around me keep petering out or are hard to get to, and the ones I’ve seen online are toooo big for my tastes.
On Tyranny by Timothy Snyder is a valuable thing to have by your side in these times of increasing fascism.

Each chapter begins with a short bit of advice as it's title, followed by a sentence or two on it's potential importance. The rest of the chapter provides concrete historical examples.

Each chapter is short, and the book is only 126 pages. Possibly the most valuable thing that you could ever read.

I'm going to be posting the first page of each chapter, because of how important I think it is to share these ideas.
#AynRand’s original introduction to The Virtue of Selfishness is now online--and it directly contradicts most of the claims people make about her #ethics.

If your picture of Rand comes from social media threads, YouTube rants, or second-hand “hot takes,” this is the text that breaks the spell.

Let’s clear out the biggest straw men right away:

❌ “Rand said selfishness means hurting people.”

No. She argues that rational self‑interest forbids coercion, exploitation, and parasitism. Predators aren’t “selfish”—they’re short‑range, self‑destructive, and irrational.

❌ “It’s just an excuse to do whatever you want.”

She draws a hard boundary between whim and #reason. Her ethics demands long‑range thinking, integrity, and principled action — the opposite of impulse.

❌ “#Objectivism celebrates cruelty.”

The introduction explicitly rejects cruelty as irrational. Benevolence is not only compatible with #egoism—it’s a natural expression of a rational, confident person.

❌ “Rand denies moral principles.”

She denies sacrifice as a moral ideal. She does not deny #morality. She argues for a code rooted in reality, reason, and the requirements of human life.

If you want to understand the argument instead of the mythology, read the primary source--it’s short, sharp, and surprisingly accessible.

Read more for context on the full book, editions, and themes.

#philosophy #individualism #reading #nonfiction #ideas #bookstodon

Starting my 2026 book thread with a beautiful cover 😍 And the book behind it is just as beautiful. Just the sort of 'place as character' narrative that I really enjoy, this is a lively and lyrical exploration of a certain landscape and the people, animals and plants that inhabit it. Even the clouds and the geology get a voice.

However heavy our lives may feel, Solà reminds us how fleeting they are to the mountains and the woods, which is perspective I find comforting.

🧵1 #books #bookstodon
