The amount of bad news that I could be sharing with you, if I chose to, is much greater than what you actually see here on my page. When people hear “bicycles” or “active transportation,” it can sound like a narrow issue, something nice to have, but secondary to bigger concerns like public safety, public health, or community connection.

CalBike exists to challenge that assumption.

Because the truth is this: our streets sit at the center of nearly every major problem we’re trying to solve.

We have given a third of our public space to roads. Roads that shape how safe we feel in our neighborhoods. Whether kids can walk to school. Whether older adults can stay mobile. Whether communities are connected, or cut apart. Whether we reduce climate pollution or lock it in for another generation. All along the life cycle - our roads, and the ability to freely use them is at the nexus of a life well lived.
Help Make Our Streets Better
When streets are designed only as many cars as quickly as possible, the consequences ripple outward: more traffic violence, worse air quality, less physical activity, deeper isolation.

This is why CalBike focuses on streets.

Not because bicycles are the only answer—but because better streets unlock progress everywhere else.
