<p><a href="/tags/xmpp/" rel="tag">#XMPP</a> enthusiasts out there: what would you say the ultimate Achilles heel of the XMPP ecosystem is, at present? Fragmentation of clients? What?</p><p>My sense is that it's this: when one goes to store an XMPP address in one's addressbook, there doesn't seem to be standard way to store an XMPP address. <a href="/tags/android/" rel="tag">#Android</a> doesn't have that as an allowable field, and <a href="/tags/thunderbird/" rel="tag">#Thunderbird</a> and <a href="/tags/nextcloud/" rel="tag">#Nextcloud</a> have an "Instant Messaging" field, where the type can be set to "XMPP". But are these two compatible with each other when trying to sync between them? <p>Even though <a href="/tags/signal/" rel="tag">#Signal</a> *itself* has sound security - taken in isolation - it's always moored in an ecosystem (that of smartphones which run <a href="/tags/ios/" rel="tag">#iOS</a> or <a href="/tags/android/" rel="tag">#Android</a>) which, by default, have <a href="/tags/ai/" rel="tag">#AI</a> set up to shoulder-surf Signal, sending reports back to the mothership. In <a href="/tags/ios/" rel="tag">#iOS</a>, that AI is called "<a href="/tags/apple/" rel="tag">#Apple</a> Intelligence", and in <a href="/tags/android/" rel="tag">#Android</a>, it's called <a href="/tags/google/" rel="tag">#Google</a> Assistant. Repeat, these are on by default. *Only a small percentage of your family, friends, colleagues, and fellow country-persons will pain-stakingly disable these.*</p><p>Sure, Signal itself is secure by default, but "a chain is only as strong as its weakest link". And the weakest link is the ecosystem which Signal is moored in - that of smartphones policed and patrolled by AI, which report back to their respective motherships *in a strong majority of cases*.</p><p>Alternatives like <a href="/tags/deltachat/" rel="tag">#Deltachat</a> (for normies willing to open their wallets/purses to rent an auto-crypt-compatible email address) and <a href="/tags/xmpp/" rel="tag">#XMPP</a> (easily free to use, however realistic and mature only for non-iOS/<a href="/tags/macos/" rel="tag">#MacOS</a>-users at present) have comparable E2E encryption. Deltachat and XMPP *don't* require smart-phone "moorings" - thereby making it much more realistic to dodge the almost-pervasively AI-patrolled ecosystems.</p><p><a href="/tags/infosec/" rel="tag">#infosec</a></p>

<p><a href="/tags/signal/" rel="tag">#Signal</a> took a huge bet that running on US big-tech toxic infrastructure is fine because its groundbreaking and industry-shaping cryptography is crafted to neutralize it and keep users safe. </p><p>But is it really feasible to live on toxic infrastructure in the longer run? </p><p><a href="/tags/deltachat/" rel="tag">#deltachat</a> rather takes a bet on the massive e-mail server network and interoperable protocols, and on <a href="/tags/chatmail/" rel="tag">#chatmail</a> servers which enforce message encryption and metadata-minimization. </p><p>Delta is for when centralization turns sour.</p>

But that is nothing than can happen overnight, and we are fine with friendly forks already. Resilient private internet communication ftw :)</p>

So I installed <a href="/tags/deltachat/" rel="tag">#DeltaChat</a> using the <a href="/tags/bsdcafe/" rel="tag">#BSDCafe</a> server that Stefano provides. Let's see how I get on with this then. 🤔<br>
<p>Signal's president claimed it takes billions to replicate the availability and reliability of "hyperscalers" (AWS/Google/Microsoft/Cloudfare) that Signal uses.</p><p><a href="/tags/chatmail/" rel="tag">#chatmail</a> and <a href="/tags/deltachat/" rel="tag">#deltachat</a> are about disproving this claim by</p><p>1) making relays super cheap (DONE)</p><p>2) enabling chat profiles to use multiple relays redundantly (WIP)</p><p>3) distributing relay knowledge among chatters (TBD).</p><p>Fat servers, corporate overlords and billionaires: not needed and better to not exist for a convivial e2ee future :)</p>

A secure private chat, familiar to those coming from Whatsapp or Telegram (without "AI", with <a href="/tags/a11y/" rel="tag">#a11y</a>).</p><p>Note: chat identities are private and can not be queried or discovered. Servers keep no track or metadata</p>

<p>End-to-End Encryption is good but metadata protection counts as much. Names, group descriptions and memberships, avatars, who talks to whom ... </p><p>Both <a href="/tags/deltachat/" rel="tag">#deltachat</a> and <a href="/tags/signal/" rel="tag">#signal</a> go to great length to protect all the metadata that WhatsApp grants itself gratuitously. <a href="/tags/matrix/" rel="tag">#Matrix</a> stores similar scales of metadata on their servers, even if you can choose which server stores it.</p><p>Everything is better than <a href="/tags/telegram/" rel="tag">#Telegram</a> which additionally stores message contents in all group chats/channels and most 1:1 chats.</p>
