Question for the #fediverse . Is there a discord alternative that's not owned by any corporate entity?
discord
Do you like the #isekai series #IsekaiYururiKikou #KosodateShinagaraBoukenshaShimasu a.k.a. #AJourneyThroughAnotherWorld #RaisingKidsWhileAdventuring in its #lightnovel, #manga, &/or #anime form? Do you still use #Discord to #chat? If your answer to both questions is YES, then here is the link to the one & only #IseYuru Discord #guild:

Discord's age verification rollout has ties to Palantir co-founder and panopticon architect Peter Thiel
You "may be part of an experiment where your information will be processed by an age-assurance vendor, Persona."

Good reads:
― the 2024 blog post
― the 2026 discussion in Lobsters.
Incidentally, I did stop using Discord. No regrets.
In case you weren't aware, #Fedify has both #Discord and #Matrix communities where you can get help, discuss features, or just chat about #ActivityPub and federated social networks.
Matrix space: #fedify:matrix.org
Discord server: https://discord.gg/bhtwpzURwd
Feel free to join either community based on your preference. Both channels have active discussions about Fedify and federation topics.
It's bothersome how often I have to tell people no, I won't be joining their Discord or Slack group. Period.
If a group of ten of us needs to chat, I'll set up an IRC channel. It's not obsolete. It's not a dinosaur. You were told that by people selling you something that is bad for you.
I've only ever begrudgingly used #Discord
Simply having my email address, IP, etc, etc, wasn't good enough, so instead of giving them further access to prove I'm a real adult human, I've attempted to delete my account.
They're giving me 14 days to change my mind.
If there's a delete now button, I didn't see it.
Protecting children online is a reasonable goal, but requiring everyone to provide papers isn't the way to do it.
If you prefer real-time chat & have a general distain for big tech, Retro Gaiden has a Matrix room for you to join
💬
The Cinny Matrix client is recommended so all the custom emojis are visible & usable. The room has end to end encryption enabled 🔒

Since Guilded is getting shut down at the end of the year, I've created a Retro Gaiden Matrix room for chatting and hanging out

PieFed as a Discord alternative
If you primarily use Discord to build a community and provide support, answer questions and share information then PieFed is a great fit and here’s why:
PieFed has all the all the advantages that traditional forums have over Discord:
Persistence – when someone asks a question or provides a reply it will stay there, visible, not get lost in the hubbub and scroll off the top of the screen, never to be seen again.
The people with knowledge don’t need to be present 24/7 to make sure they’re available to help people when they ask for it, they can reply hours or days later.
Every interaction builds up a publicly searchable corpus of information that search engines can index which increases the visibility of your community and product / service.
For a lot of communities, Discord was a really poor choice to begin with, made because of network effects and familiarity. The Discord vs forums debate has been had before so I won’t belabor this.
Besides forum-equivalent functionality, PieFed also offers these community building features:
A wiki so the community (or just the moderators if you prefer) can build a reference resource that takes care of all the repetitive and obvious questions / issues people commonly have.
Events for bringing people together at the same time. Events can have a physical location or an online meeting link.
Question and answers similar to StackOverflow where an answer can be visually distinguished as an answer, and the original question marked as solved.
PieFed is federated so your new PieFed server starts life as a member of a network of other communities. You can attract new people into your community and provide more to your existing community members. This is all under your control so you can federate as much or as little as you like. Operate PieFed completely standalone if you prefer!
Private groups for sensitive topics or moderation coordination.
Strong moderation features that help you identify bad actors and build a healthy community.
As of writing there are over 75 PieFed servers – you can migrate your Discord community to one of those or self host it on your own hardware.
When thinking about discord alternatives PieFed probably isn’t the first thing people come up with. After all, it has no video or voice chat and is not a chatroom. But I hope you can see that if you’re not leaning heavily on video/voice chat that PieFed is worth checking out. Have a browse of https://piefed.social and see what you think!
#Discord🚀 The CybersecKyle Community is live! A friendly Discord where security + tech meet: news breakdowns, labs, tools, cloud/automation chats, chill coffee breaks, and so much more! Beginners → pros welcome.

So there's apparently a survey circulating in which Discord is asking about people's opinions on integrating AI.

Oh look: #discord outsourced their age verification to some vendor. You know, the #ageverification that countries like the UK want to make mandatory for basically every online service. And the vendor had a data breach exposing photos of government IDs for 70,000 people.
Do you feel safer? How many children did we protect by exposing the IDs of these 70,000 (presumably) adults? Thanks for taking one for the team, you 70,000 canaries in the #privacy coal mine.
Time to dust off those early 2000s forums!
"Discord announced on Monday that it’s rolling out age verification on its platform globally starting next month, when it will automatically set all users’ accounts to a “teen-appropriate” experience unless they demonstrate that they’re adults."

A minha alternativa a Discord é: old school for the new times foro + app para (video)chamadas/chat a escolher 👌
(aguardo que todas essas apps de softwere livre implementem opções para comunidades em breve)
What to choose when Discord goes to 💩
(Thread)
Yesterday, #Discord announced all accounts will be marked as "Teen" accounts until you go through a Age verification process. https://discord.com/press-releases/discord-launches-teen-by-default-settings-globally
Just my opinions, I'm a designer & software/devops engineer with 25+ years experience. But also stubborn and opinionated 😉
This, has many troubling implications.
For 1. Discords past attempts at age verification have left tens of thousands vulnerable to identity theft

Notatka dla przyszłej siebie, albo dla zainteresowanych:
**Jak dodać bota do serwera Discord**
1. Załóż aplikację na Discord dev.
2. W zakładce Bots kliknij Reset Token. Poprosi o uwierzytelnienie, np. hasłem. Dostaniesz długi token. Zapisz i pilnuj.
9. Uruchom program z Botem.
10. Bot powinien być obecny na serwerze i powinien gadać.
