Finally, an updated #introduction: Hello! From #Shanghai to #Montreal, now in #NewYorkCity. Master #student in #ComputerScience at #NYU Tandon, still struggling to figure out what I gonna do next. Gained notoriety for making Barinsta, now I hang out in #Matrix and ActivityPub circles and code stuff once in a while. Am a #FediAdmin. Fervent user of #PublicTransport. Knows too little of too many things.
If you care about what you're building, don't host your stuff with Hetzner. Don't trust them.

They will take you down without warning and won't answer your queries.
Fedi Instance Admins: S3 buckets and CDNs. Public buckets with a CDN are simple enough.

Private buckets with signed urls...I understand how they work. Call the S3 API to grab a signed URL for a specific private asset, the URL lives short term. Anyone with that signed url can access it (?).

But doesn't it negate the function of a CDN? Seems like using signed URLs would be much more costly since you can't cache them for very long.

#FediAdmin #MastoAdmin

If you're running a Fediverse server, you don't have to keep growing forever!

Some of the most thoughtfully-run and well-moderated servers on the Fediverse close themselves to new members when they reach a sustainable size.

The Fediverse is also much safer in the long run if its members are spread out on many servers.

The Fediverse isn't a startup and there are no investors to worry about. The aim isn't to cash out or gain clout, but to build something humane and sustainable.

#FediAdmin

#Fediblock recommendation, there's a rogue server cloning real accounts so it can impersonate them. There is no legitimate reason for such behaviour, admins should suspend it ASAP:

mastodon.arell.ai

Admins might want to suspend the main domain:

arell.ai

This would be good in case the owner tries the same stunt on a different subdomain.
Time to bust a Fediverse myth: asking people to boost your post does NOT create any connections to your server.

All that boosting a post does is boost that post, it does not have any effect at all on how your server federates.

For methods that actually work, I've done a guide on making your account and posts more visible:

I've also done a guide on all the things that help your server see more of the Fediverse:

#FediAdmin #MastoAdmin
