During (and a week or so before) FediCon I got extremely swamped with FediCon work that had to get done before the day of the conference — so, I haven't had a chance to reward people with badges, yet.
Once I've uploaded the FediCon videos (to @fedicon ) I am going to start rewarding people FediCon 2025 badges.

The other day I finally got it. Why #Bluesky is so popular with "regular people" (aka non-techies). It's because it's CENTRALIZED (of course the Bluesky folks would never admit it out right).
One name: Bluesky.
One official URL to join / browse / post messages
One official app: "Bluesky Social" on app stores
In this post-literate society where people have been trained by commercial social media for 2 DECADES to choose the easiest, most frictionless option, of course they will pick Bluesky over the #Fediverse.
Try introducing the concept of servers / instances and names like Mastodon, Sharkey, Pleroma, GoToSocial, Friendica, Pixelfed, PeerTube, Lemmy to people not familiar with them. They'd think you're speaking a foreign language.
The Fediverse is made up of thousands of independent servers. You can't log in to https://joinmastodon.org or https://joinpeertube.org to browse Mastodon or PeerTube. Conversely, when you log into Bluesky you see messages by Bluesky members.
People need to be educated first about defederated options and their numerous advantages.
I get it now. I'm still 1000% in when it comes to the Fediverse but I understand.
And I'm tired.
And I'm posting this here on my GoToSocial account because I wanted to say my piece in one go and I would have run into Mastodon character limits.
How many people have I convinced to join the Fediverse in my 9 months advocating for it through a blog? TWO. How many people are still active on it? One.
Off I go play with LEGOs with my little one - in 12 years, when she's old enough I will set up her own instance. So Fediverse, you gotta be thriving in 2037.

Looks like mastodon.art is limiting federation with mastodon.social due to the high volume of spam accounts over there.
If you're looking for an instance similar to mastodon.social and still want to interact with folks on mastodon.art, consider joining mastodon.online. It’s invite-only, so you'll have to be invited if you want to join. Let me know if you want an invitation!

Something to SNS providers and software can learn from the gaming industry is name filters.
Majority, if not all, online #games implement a RegExp-based or manual input name blocklist. In the socmed landscape, software like Mastodon should implement it to prevent any handles **and** display names with "Mastodon" in it.
Instance admins and moderators should be able to add new entries as they see fit. They can choose between RegExp matching or manual input.
It is an effective way to minimize fake accounts pretending to be the platform, instance, service, and/or software. For example, the Mastodon **software** is currently being bombarded by fake accounts about "Mastodon account verification", with "Mastodon" in either their handle or display name, or both.
Other social media software and platforms should implement it as well. Of course, it is not the ultimate solution, but it at least adds another layer to enable admins and moderators to fight against scammers and phishers pretending to be official accounts or channels.

Most people and organisations don't immediately try stuff they hear about. Usually they need to hear it mentioned by a few different sources before they actually try it.

Infrastructure Update
I have just rolled out a configuration change across the entire FediMeteo network.
I've enabled remote purge propagation. Since weather forecasts have a short shelf life, there is no need for old reports to take up space on your servers.
From now on, when FediMeteo deletes local posts (usually after 14 (was 3) days), we will also send a deletion signal to the rest of the Fediverse. This helps keep your timelines clean and your storage usage low.

Digital social networking is one of the most important threads in the fabric of our societies. Right now, we’re letting that thread be controlled by social media platforms that let advertisements for scams stay up because they’re profitable, and that use their algorithms to run human research experiments on us without our consent. That’s not the society I want.

🎉 Huge shoutouts to two amazing contributors from Korea's #OSSCA program who just made #Fedify even better!
First, @z9mb1 delivered PR #321, adding a handy -o/--output option to fedify lookup. Now you can save lookup results directly to files instead of just printing to terminal—a nice quality-of-life improvement for analysis and scripting workflows.
But the real showstopper is @joonnot's incredible PR #283, which introduces the brand new @fedify/testing package! This massive contribution (2,014 lines across 20 files) brings MockFederation and MockContext classes that completely transform how we test federated applications. No more complex setups or actual network requests—just clean, straightforward unit testing with activity tracking, inbox simulation, and queue-aware testing capabilities.
These contributions solve real pain points and showcase the amazing talent emerging from the OSSCA program. Both features will be available in the upcoming Fedify 1.8 release. The future of federated software development just got a lot brighter! 🚀
