<p>In previous years, I published two &quot;fediverse tech roadmap&quot; posts:</p><p>- <a href="https://mitra.social/objects/018ccbfc-6b7e-1490-086c-d41bff6efb71" rel="nofollow">Fediverse tech roadmap 2024</a><br>- <a href="https://mitra.social/objects/019437a2-a2e5-ed6f-ebff-dcbb6bc6aba4" rel="nofollow">Fediverse tech roadmap 2025</a></p><p>However, I didn&#x27;t publish such post this year because not much has happened in 2025. Many problems I talked about require complex solutions, but unfortunately proposed solutions are often very limited or lead to centralization. Or worse, there is no solution but only an imitation of work. I don&#x27;t want to write about that.</p><p>I saw a thread today where ATProto ecosystem was compared to <a href="/tags/activitypub/" rel="tag">#ActivityPub</a>. Things are happening in the Atmosphere, but not in Fediverse. MAU graphs are flat. What&#x27;s going on?</p><p>There are multiple factors at play, but I think fake activity may be the biggest contributor. Trivial developments presented as breakthroughs. Features that already exist somewhere in Fediverse presented as new inventions. Vaporware. Specs written by people who have no idea how to implement them. Working groups that do nothing but meetings.</p><p>Real work is ignored, competent developers see that and quit.</p><p>We need to fix this.</p><p>For my part, I will continue to document <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#Fediverse</a> development at <span class="h-card"><a href="https://mitra.social/users/weekinfediverse" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>weekinfediverse</span></a></span>. But this newsletter doesn&#x27;t have much impact.</p>

<p>When I first started working with <a href="/tags/activitypub/" rel="tag">#ActivityPub</a>, before <a href="/tags/fedify/" rel="tag">#Fedify</a> existed, it felt like writing web apps in Perl and CGI in the late &#x27;90s. Interesting, even exciting—but never comfortable. That era where your business logic and your protocol plumbing were just… the same thing:</p><p>print &quot;HTTP/1.1 200 OK&quot;print &quot;Content-Type: text/html&quot;printprint &quot;Hello, world!&quot;</p><p>Decades of web development have given us layers of abstraction we now take for granted. Nobody hand-parses application/x-www-form-urlencoded query strings anymore. Nobody writes their own JSON codec, or manually constructs HTTP request/response messages. These things just aren&#x27;t your problem when you&#x27;re building an app.</p><p>ActivityPub development still feels like they are your problem. What do you do when the <a href="https://www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams#actor" rel="nofollow" class="ellipsis" title="www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams#actor"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams#</span><span class="invisible">actor</span></a> property comes in as a string instead of an array? What about when <a href="https://www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams#object" rel="nofollow" class="ellipsis" title="www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams#object"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams#</span><span class="invisible">object</span></a> is an embedded entity rather than a URI? How exactly do you implement HTTP Signatures? And wait—what&#x27;s Linked Data Signatures, and do you need that too?</p><p>The real issue isn&#x27;t that ActivityPub is complicated per se. It&#x27;s that you can&#x27;t get away with understanding it at a high level. You have to know it the way an implementor knows it—every edge case, every inconsistency in how different servers serialize JSON-LD, every signature scheme that exists in the wild. That&#x27;s a lot to learn before you can even start thinking about your actual app. And when developers understandably cut corners on the protocol to focus on their product, it quietly becomes an interoperability problem for the whole ecosystem.</p><p>What I want ActivityPub development to feel like: you spend a day understanding the big picture, and then you just… build your app. That was the goal when I started Fedify, and honestly, we&#x27;re not fully there yet. But it&#x27;s where I want to get.</p><p><a href="/tags/fedidev/" rel="tag">#fedidev</a> <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#fediverse</a></p>

<p>I’m building a new tool and looking for volunteers to test it! A <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#fediverse</a> linktree.</p><p>It’s designed for two types of people:</p><p>Normies / newcomers – Think of it like a free, privacy-respecting Linktree. No trackers, no ads. But here&#x27;s the cool part: it&#x27;s a Trojan horse for the fediverse. Your profile link is itself an ActivityPub actor. That means people can interact with it directly in the fediverse, and it encourages exploration of open platforms.</p><p>Fediverse users, If you have multiple accounts (<a href="/tags/mastodon/" rel="tag">#Mastodon</a>, <a href="/tags/pixelfed/" rel="tag">#Pixelfed</a>, Loops, a federated blog…), you know the struggle: sometimes you just want one persona to follow. This tool gives you that. It doesn’t post on its own (read-only), but it boosts all your other accounts and even has its own <a href="/tags/activitypub/" rel="tag">#ActivityPub</a> inbox. PLUS it can receive and show your badges issued by <span class="h-card"><a href="https://badgefed.vocalcat.com/" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>badgefed</span></a></span> !</p><p>Interested in testing? <p>I saw the cover of the current <span class="h-card"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@linuxmagazine" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>linuxmagazine</span></a></span> “Streaming in the Fediverse”, and I’m a bit disappointed at the actual coverage of <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#Fediverse</a> music services and the community of musicians - it is primarily a feature on *Navidrome* (which is great, but not federated) with a mention of Funkwhale. It could have covered Bandwagon, Mirlo, The Indie Beat Radio &amp; TV, PeerTube and more. I’d be happy to submit a piece on this at some point if the editors are interested…!</p>

<p>There&#x27;s a new project called Holos which makes it a lot easier to host a Fediverse server on your own mobile device. <p>Push Notifications and MastoBlaster</p>On iOS, push notifications must go through Apple’s servers. This is not something that can be bypassed, as it is part of the operating system’s architecture.<br><br>MastoBlaster, like other Fediverse apps, uses a design that maximizes user privacy.<br><br>When you log in to your instance, the app and the server exchange the necessary cryptographic keys. The app also communicates to the instance the address of the relay, which is the server responsible for forwarding notifications to Apple.<br><br>When a new notification is generated:<br><br>1. Your instance encrypts the notification.<br>2. It sends the encrypted payload to the relay.<br>3. The relay forwards it to Apple using its own authentication key.<br>4. Apple delivers it to your device.<br><br>The content of the notification is encrypted by your Fediverse server and can only be decrypted by your device.<br><br>The relay, which in the case of MastoBlaster is dedicated and hosted on a FreeBSD server, receives only encrypted data.
