Monday morning, which means: backing up my #YunoHost setup.

I see that #GoToSocial has an update available but I'm too scared to upgrade it. Having my 4th cup of espresso and working up the courage to do it (I hear it takes a looong time). Hoping I don't break anything 😅

In other news, I am LOVING my #LinkStack and having a glimpse into the links that are the most popular (LinkStack offers you a ranking in reverse order of the most clicked links when you log into their dashboard). Just upgrade a VM of mine running #FreeBSD 14.3 to 15.0 RELEASE, all went well in probably 20 minutes. Super fast, dead simple, and not frightening at all thanks to #ZFS BE backups. It felt so easy that I am even a bit bored.

Anyone got a recommendation for a low profile USB-C opensource physical security key?

I know about solokeys, but unlike yubikey, they don't have a short USB-C security key.

I also saw Somu (also solokeys) which are the right form factor, but they only support USB-A.

If not, do you know if solokey is ever gonna come out with a mini USB-C key? I really need a tiny yubikey type thing I can just forget about.

(I have full sized keys already as backups, just in case.)

Edit: I've added a picture of the YubiKey 5C Nano as an example of what I'm after. The idea is that the total length that sticks out from the computer is very very small, and therefore is less likely to break off.

new release of #Fedialgo, the customizable timeline algorithm / filtering system for your Mastodon feed, counts the number of times each hashtag appears in your timeline even if people don't use a "#" character to give you a better sense of what people are talking about in the Fediverse.

there's a little bit of art vs. science here because some strings are disqualified from this kind of counting (e.g. a word like "the" should not be counted even if some maniac decided to make it a hashtag) so let me know if you see any weirdly high counts.

A 20-year-old #FreeSoftware developer, Erfan Arabi, is reportedly facing 8 years in prison in #Iran for “creating community against national security.”

Let that sink in: building community is being treated like a crime.

If you care about free software, digital freedom, and basic human dignity, this should outrage you. When a regime criminalizes collaboration, it is not defending security, it is attacking the very idea of a free society.

Getting started with XMPP/Jabber and PGP for federated, encrypted messaging

This is a short thread where I explain how I started using the XMPP protocol and PGP encryption for secure messaging. I am not a security expert, but I am a mathematician and I am confortable with the Linux command line. This guide is for people who want to use PGP for secure messaging easily. You will need to be okay with typing commands into the Linux command line in order to do this, but I will tell you exactly what to enter.

Part 1: XMPP

Mastodon is like email, but for social media. You sign up for an account with a server, and then you can talk with any other accounts that are signed up on other servers, as long as your servers are getting along. (No one wants emails from the sketchy spam server, and we want to be able to choose between Yahoo, Gmail, etc.) XMPP (a.k.a. Jabber) is the same thing for text messaging.

Just like signing up for an email/Mastodon account, you need to sign up for an account. You can find a list of servers at https://list.jabber.at/ and will probably at least need to provide an email addess when making an account.

Once you have made an account, you need a client. On Linux, I've been having a good time using Dino (https://dino.im/). You can then enter your account name and password to log into your XMPP account and start chatting! There are both public rooms and you can also message directly with your friends.
