Some amazing details emerge in a Sunday Times article about Manna Drones, who are (well, were) trying to build up a food delivery model in Ireland.

1) Having to employ delivery people to deliver the food to the drones wipes out all benefits.

2) Simply assuming they didn't need planning permission for drone launch areas.

That problem of getting food to the drones remained right up until the recent pause in its operations in Ireland. In planning documents filed this month, the company outlined how it employed four people at its Coolmine facility, two of whom were specifically involved in food collection. One employee was designated for going out to collect the food on foot and bring it back to the drone, while the other would zip out on a company e-bike to reach restaurants that were further away. While the vast majority of collections were on foot, The Sunday Times understands Manna has used e-bikes in other areas too. Clearly, then, a combination of logistics and regulations had limited Manna to a small geographic area of operations. Breaking past that barrier and tapping into a market of restaurants outside the Dublin 15 area proved difficult. The Sunday Times understands that Manna held a number of discussions with Supermac’s, the Galway fast-food chain owned by Pat McDonagh, which ended when it became apparent that the only way for the food to get from the restaurant to the drone was for either Supermac’s or Manna to employ drivers to ferry the food by motorised transport — wiping out any of the cost, speed and environmental advantages in drone delivery.

While the company had temporary planning permission for its main hub in Blanchardstown, it had proceeded with its other hubs on the basis that it did not require planning permission. As Healy told the Dublin Inquirer: “You don’t need planning permission to take off and land drones.”
