Which program is the one that surprised you most that it is available on Linux?

I’m looking for a VPS server provider. I would like to check on any BSD options if the price is good but Linux is fine. Trying to change my current provider as they became quite greedy with the latest renewal. Hopefully somewhere close to Japan or APAC

Any recommendations?

After my having 3 Sinclair computers, I moved on to Atari ST, for a week... before I switched it for an Amiga. At the time, Atari and Amiga were the big names in home computing, while those with more funds might have gone with a Mac or a PC.

I've been gifted 3 boxes of Dell 5/7 series latitudes. All solid state, i7 and 16 gigs of ram!

Came from a company that was just culligm them for being too old.

You know there getting the #linux and #NixOS treatment and going back out into the world for free locally for folks.

Thanks to Linux for giving machines like this an epic second life!

Pondering #Linux distros...

Arch-based

You're either doing the full Arch experience (good for you), or doing something Arch-based that's going to be unpredictably unstable and leave you with a non-booting system at some point in the future, and not having the technical understanding to fix it. Been burned by that already (twice!), hard pass.

Directly #Debian-based

I love Debian. I've loved it ever since a kind person at a Linux LUG burned me a copy of the Debian Potato 2.2 CD-ROMs in 2000. But an every-two-year release schedule is kind of hard to deal with given our current break-neck seat-of-your-pants development practices. Lots of compilers don't even want to work in Debian after midpoint or so in the release (1 year old), requiring things like rustup to be able to compile many tools.

Ubuntu-based

I'm going to skip over all of the meme-based criticisms of Ubuntu, and even the more technical criticisms of snap, which isn't that hard to eliminate. Simply put, from the things I've read, canonical sounds like a cult of personality, and gives me a bit of the heebie-jeebies. Other than that, ubuntu-based distros have the great benefit of actually decent user-focus and community support.

Fedora-based

#Fedora is adored by a lot of Linux enthusiasts, and has the benefit of a fairly large user-base, as well as being in the sweet-spot of having biannual updates. The only negative is the big lumbering evil shadow of IBM. I honestly don't know exactly what the relationship between Fedora and IBM (RedHat) is, but I'm fairly certain [it can't be said that there is none].

Umm... what exactly is left? Anything user-friendly? Well, perhaps...

OpenSuSE-based. (Yes, I'm using the old capitalization, because I'm crochety like that ;)

OpenSUSE Leap seems to have a release every year, which is pretty cool, but the new #OpenSUSE #SlowRoll seems like a really nice solution!
SUSE gives off a lot of "RedHat before they turned super evil" vibes, and I'm down with that
OpenSuSE also packages a lot of software for other distros. The debian package I'm using for #GPXSee, for example, is provided by https://packages.opensuse.org — that's super cool!

Personally I think that azerty was meant made by drunk students trying to troll people but it somehow caught on.

Hey, qwerty is kinda bad… You think we could try to make one that’s even worse to mock it?
Oooh that’d be hilarious! Let’s make a French version of qwerty but a lot worse!
I know, lets put dead keys for all accents except for the accent aigu so that when you need it on an uppercase letter you CAN’T type it!
Ahah good one! Let’s also not add anyway to type an uppercase cedilla! Imagine, a French keyboard that can’t type uppercase é and ç !
And what if we rearrange all the punctuation and symbols so that the open and closed parenthesis are no longer next to each other? It’d be sooo funny!

Good one! How about we don’t add guillemets which are used in French instead of english double quotes, so that people will be forced to type double quotes and their advanced text editors will have to automatically replace them by guillemets so that the text uses correct punctuation for French?

I got better! Let’s put the period on the same key as the semicolon, but with the semicolon as the default character, and periods will be Shift+semicolon! That way we can say that it’s canonically why French phases are long-winded: it’s easier to type a comma or semicolon than a period!

When I was still on Windows I put qwerty as my keyboard layout and used the Alt+number shortcuts for accents because that was less painful than using azerty… Those shortcuts didn’t work anymore when I switched to linux so I had to find a real solution, which ended up being a colemak base which I modified to add accented letters. I don’t like bepo, it moves z x c v and I like them being in the same place as in qwerty for the shortcuts I’m used to, and I didn’t know qwerty-fr existed at the time 😅

Je traine sur le fediverse depuis 2017 où je m'autoradicalise à vos côtés. Je souhaite la fin du 🔥 capitalisme avant la fin du monde. J'aime la technologie hors des GAFAM, je suis fan de #gentoo et d' #alpine #linux . J'aimerai que chacun puisse s'auto-héberger et j'ai développé une obsession pour les ⌨️ #claviers (mais je me soigne par injection de radinerie).

Je passe mon temps à mater des 🎬 films et il me tarde le beau temps pour aller faire des promenades en 🚲 #vélo et je fais un peu d' 🧗‍♂️ #escalade.
