This was really disappointing. There are definitely moments of brilliant direction, stunning character design, and impressive uses of the score and soundtrack, but the script needed a lot more polish. For the entire film there wasn't a single character that I felt I could latch on to and it made this viewing a slog. (I actually fell asleep during the first 40 minutes on my first viewing.) This movie is easily half an hour longer than it needs to be and I still don't have a clear understanding of why--not everything that was included needed to be and the film's plot turns feel as though they are pilfering pretty unabashedly from THE PRINCE OF EGYPT. I really like films in this genre, especially when animated, so this, while not awful, was definitely a letdown.

Deportations were happening before Trump and most Americans--most USians--were okay with them. Jennicet Gutierrez was hassled out of Barack Obama's White House bringing attention to this very issue and it didn't register a blip on the radar of most "progressives". Please don't situate this film in the context of Trump's escalation of tactics endorsed by previous administrations; don't perform outage for clicks or likes or validation for the fact that it helps you finally "see" the humanity of those regularly denied it.This film is great because it exists and because it shows the entirely untenable reality that many residents of this country are forced to make choices between financial stability and community uplift and empowerment. I applaud McKay for getting so much right without the film devolving into torture porn. We've had enough of that. It's time to recognize the magnitude and the history of the harms of yesterday and today--and act.

For a horror movie I have to say it's pretty astounding. I can certainly see how it ended up becoming a cult classic given its commitment to self-awareness throughout its runtime. I almost want to call it the perfect marriage between pure horror and absolute camp (a la Scary Movie and even the Scooby Doo remakes). I enjoyed it that much.There's a good deal of tension in the first half and there were quite a few times where on first viewing I literally freaked my shit out. On the sound front the music is scored, cued, and mixed particularly well and the latter half is a ridiculously entertaining romp through the crass and utterly ridiculous (one word: unicorn).With all of these jostling ideas and tones it's impressive that you actually feel for some of these characters especially given to the shortness of the film--it comes over at just over 90 minutes--so credit obviously lays with the writers. The actors themselves are equally talented, though it's really the writing that compels them to be something new, something more, to what have become conventional horror archetypes.All in all my first viewing was great and its an enjoyable ride on repeat.
