At one point Hannah Einbinder is watching the movie with Gillian Anderson and theres a split diopter shot and she leans over and says “split diopter” and I felt very seen. That and the whole, being obsessed with a movie and trying to climb inside the frame etc.

Not a lot to say here other than it's a biopic of Anthony Bourdain's one crazy summer when he decides to become a chef. The kid from the holdovers does a good job, but this is a thing which probably did not need to exist.

Rated Obsession 7/10

Obsession is a rather evocative cautionary tale told in the vein of the ubiquitous Scary Stories of the 90s. It's psychological horror similar to Backrooms but here the terror manifests through connections that can't be shaken and the ways our habits of--and obsessions with--inauthenticity and self-deception can destroy every genuinely supportive structure in our lives before eventually seeking to claim our very souls. Navarette gives an amazing performance and the pacing is rather interesting. This was an unexpected delight.

Rated A Quiet Place Part II 5/10

It's enjoyable but mostly forgettable. We do learn some new things about the creatures and I'm encouraged by what I'm seeing of the world-building especially where other people are concerned, but this needed to do more and with quicker pacing. It's great that it has something to say about young people and maturation but it doesn't do nearly enough to carry on the character development that was EXACTINGLY earned in the first film. A movie where Emily Blunt goes on to find her daughter and leaves the strange man to take care of her son and baby would've been a lot more interesting to me, but I also understand how that presents the potential for discontinuity. It is passable and holds things together, which is more than most sequels can so, so I really hope Part III builds on and expands the stakes. Give us more direct conflicts with and between humans, PLEASE.
