Rated Ice Cream Man 6/10
This summer, get in line for perfect scoops of gore and violence, courtesy of Eli Roth, who serves up both in his new film, Ice Cream Man. As the director of such films like Hostel and Cabin Fever, as well as 2023's Thanksgiving, this time, he takes us for a spin with 31 flavors of killer kids and frozen terror.
Set in a small town as the school year comes to an end, a mysterious ice cream man begins to patrol the streets, serving up ice cream to all of the children and adults. Soon after, the children fall ill and begin to wreak havoc on anyone and anything in their way, dismembering family members and strangers alike. It's gory, violent, and offers insanely creative kills that'll leave horror fans smiling with pleasure.
The film also takes a few interesting turns.
For starters, this film is not a remake or revision of Ice Cream Man, the 1995 film starring Clint Howard. Same name, very different approach, so there's no need to pass on this (and you shouldn't). Plus, in some ways, it dives into Religious Horror. While that may make you scratch your head, it works until the very end of the film, which delivers a slight gut-punch right before the credits roll.
Forget the Lactaid - Ice Cream Man is a fun film packaged with laughs, necessary violence (former schoolteacher here - those kids deserve it), a good story, and a few twists that, when combined, delivers the perfect ice cream sundae with all of the toppings and a cherry on top! 🍦

Added Resident Evil to Movie Watchlist
Rated Bad Karaoke 6/10
Finally, a decent karaoke horror film! As a karaoke enthusiast, Bad Karaoke is anything but.
Bad Karaoke, straight from its premiere at Tubi FrightFest, hits both high and low notes, but, ultimately, offers a fun watching (and, at times, listening) experience.
The high note is that the storyline is clever. A possessed karaoke machine judges its singers. If they pass, they live. If they do meet the machine's expectations, they have to choose between three options for how they will die. It's messy (gore-wise), but the following reactions (if any) from the characters who witness their deaths were too mellow for what happens throughout. That's where the notes fall flat.
Overall, this was a great directorial debut for both Robert J. Steinmiller Jr. and Chris Lightbody. The script needs a bit of improvement, but the settings let the story flow, and the music wasn't bad as well. Let's say it was Do-Re-Me-Fantastic!
Bonus: This is me at live band karaoke.
Film Setup: I was looking for a pitch-perfect (viewing-wise) setup to watch Bad Karaoke with, and settled with LG OLED TV's filmmaker mode for a great viewing experience.

Rated Down 6/10
Down is a film about a possessed elevator in one of Manhattan's most-visited buildings. When two workers, whose company installed those elevators, go to investigate these sudden malfunctions, the truth is exposed, and something malevolent has taken control of who goes up and down... or leaves in a body bag.
When all is said and done, it's not a bad film, but having to listen to a pre-Mulholland Drive Naomi Watts attempt a New York accent was brutal. What's even worse is that the film, which was briefly filmed in New York a very short time before the 9/11 attacks, mentions the 1993 attacks on the World Trade Center and Osama bin Laden. Creepy, indeed.
Overall, Down isn't a terrible effort, especially since it's a remake of Down director Dick Mass's 1983 film The Lift. The concept of a possessed elevator can only go in so many ways asides from up and down. I'd like to see a third remake of this.
