wood horse, good filmI'm still processing this beast, but two things stand out to me immediately:1) Nolan and co are incredibly good at making a big gambit feel tense - even if we already know the result. And I'm not even talking because of how well known The Odyssey is - in the course of the film, with no external knowledge, we already know that Odysseus' idea is what beats Troy, and that he and Menelaus survive. And yet, the Trojan Horse escape and gate opening is genuinely a nail biter.2) The whole film is raw, visceral, brutal. There is spectacle and scale, for sure, but it all gets grounded in dirt, hammered metal, and simple colors. Wide, barren landscapes. The music is frequently just plucked strings and primitive flutes. And the Circe scene....... the Cyclops.......

Rated Sherman's March 8/10

The story of a young man who finds love while attempting to film a documentary about Sherman and his Southern Campaign and the effects it had on the people years later.The film is a long watch. If you go in wanting the history aspect, prepare to be bored. It is an interesting concept, however, and a model of a personal connection to documentary making that every film student should see.I watched this movie at the historic Film Streams Dundee Theater.

Rated Spider-Man: Brand New Day 10/10

Perfection. It’s easily my favorite non-Spider-Verse movie. Proper sad boy Peter Parker. The banter between him and Punisher was hilarious! It opens up the universe while telling a distinctly Spider-Man story without ever losing sight of that fact. And visually it’s a feast with some of the best choreography, special effects, and visual effects we’ve ever seen from the MCU. I can’t overstate how much the practical effects provided a needed sense of reality and grounded-ness to the film. His suit has creases and wrinkles! I adore this movie and can’t wait to see it again.
