I wanted try out #deepseek and #Chatgpt o3-mini al little bit and thought: Get your #selfhosting setup cleaned up and those #nextcloud errors.

In a way I hate to say it, but #AI was way easier and faster than hours spent searching the web, reading reddit and asking in forums. And I totally get why that is: I can't expect that everybody and there grandfather jumps to my help. And AI is borrowed knowledge.

Dear US friends. For a few bucks a month you can get, say, a terabyte of storage in a European datacenter at an EU-based hosting company to store pictures, documents, backups from you, your family and friends to keep them a bit further away from US authorities. It's not a 100% guarantee, but better than nothing.

I personally have #Nextcloud based storage at #Hetzner for that. Other companies offer similar solutions. Locally I just have the Nextcloud sync app installed.

https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-share/

#XMPP enthusiasts out there: what would you say the ultimate Achilles heel of the XMPP ecosystem is, at present? Fragmentation of clients? What?

My sense is that it's this: when one goes to store an XMPP address in one's addressbook, there doesn't seem to be standard way to store an XMPP address. #Android doesn't have that as an allowable field, and #Thunderbird and #Nextcloud have an "Instant Messaging" field, where the type can be set to "XMPP". But are these two compatible with each other when trying to sync between them? Edit: Yes, but there's a catch: *the XMPP address must be prefixed with "xmpp:"*

So "[email protected]" is not an OK XMPP address, but "xmpp:[email protected]" is.

Then to make matters worse, now there's a wish to change the labeling of "XMPP Address" to "Chat ID": https://gultsch.social/@daniel/114012904576436518

It might be a long time before the address synchy-ness ever works again between Android <-> #Davx5 <-> Nextcloud <->Thunderbird

Note: Android allows a "Jabber" type for an IM address, where you *don't* prefix the address with "xmpp:".

(#DeltaChat gets to gloat hard here, as they have plain-old email addresses)

#prosody #conversations #gajim #dino #snikket #monocles #monal

Dear Fedi friends,

I just hit "publish" on my blog post "A newbie's guide to #selfhosting with #YunoHost.
@board #百度网盘 #百度 #Baidu #Nextcloud #ProtonDrive #Proton #OpenSource #BigTech #DigitalPrivacy

I've come to the conclusion that, while I am still using #Windows 11 out of inertia, it's time to contemplate an exit plan towards #Linux . The switch won't be any time soon (I have too much other stuff on my plate for the foreseeable future), but I do want to avoid paying further license fees to #Microsoft .

Major areas of concern:

- My #Steam library. I am by no means a heavy gamer, but I want to check if the major games I enjoy are known to work on Linux.
- Migrating away from #GoogleDrive towards #NextCloud is going to be a major chore, but it's something I can start in advance.
- I am a very heavy user of Notepad++ for my #TeXLaTeX typesetting, so I need a replacement whose user experience comes close (and no, neither vim nor emacs count).

As for what distribution to choose... I dunno. Lots of people at my place of work use #Debian , so maybe that would be a good idea?
