I recently succeeded in capturing a complex scene—more by chance than anything—at a demonstration in Rostock’s city harbor. The shot taken just a second later showed only the usual jumble of people. But here, everything comes together for me: the foreground, middle ground, and background; several small stories; a standout subject; and, as a little joke, the flagpole that seems to be growing out of the person’s head. Normally, I tend to prefer more uncluttered compositions. Recently, I’ve come to appreciate such complex photos through Matt Stuart’s work. And even though I can think of almost exclusively color examples of this genre—I actually like this one better in black and white.

Top view of a night light with a vintage Edison-style LED bulb. It has what appears to be a bare filament that glows a beautiful orange within an unfrosted glass globe. Measures about 1.75 inches in diameter. It's just the thing if you want to go to bed thinking that it's actually 1900 instead of 2026. (Of course I'd rather go to bed sometimes thinking that it's actually 1776 but I can't figure out how to plug in a campfire.)
