<p>Sorry Fedifriends, I am going to keep banging on this drum from time to time:</p><p>ORGANIZATION AWARDS</p><p>Outstanding Public Transportation System - Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST), Monterey, CA</p><p><a href="https://aptapassengertransport.com/apta-to-honor-awards-winners-hall-of-fame-inductees-top-organizations-leaders-at-transform/" rel="nofollow" class="ellipsis" title="aptapassengertransport.com/apta-to-honor-awards-winners-hall-of-fame-inductees-top-organizations-leaders-at-transform/"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">aptapassengertransport.com/apt</span><span class="invisible">a-to-honor-awards-winners-hall-of-fame-inductees-top-organizations-leaders-at-transform/</span></a></p><p><a href="/tags/mstrocks/" rel="tag">#MSTRocks</a> <a href="/tags/publictransportation/" rel="tag">#PublicTransportation</a> <a href="/tags/publictransit/" rel="tag">#PublicTransit</a></p>

<p>Did you know that the Toronto Zoo used to run a monorail (ish)? </p><p>The 5.6km transit system closed down in 1994. However the concrete structure that supported the rail is still around in the middle of the forest near Scarborough/Rouge Park.</p><p>I knew it was reachable because of an old reddit post and also because we can see it from Google Maps.</p><p>But I didn't know "how" to get there. So with a few friends we decided to find out</p><p><a href="https://jeromegagnonvoyer.wordpress.com/2025/05/11/finding-the-toronto-zoo-monorail/" rel="nofollow" class="ellipsis" title="jeromegagnonvoyer.wordpress.com/2025/05/11/finding-the-toronto-zoo-monorail/"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">jeromegagnonvoyer.wordpress.co</span><span class="invisible">m/2025/05/11/finding-the-toronto-zoo-monorail/</span></a></p><p><a href="/tags/publictransit/" rel="tag">#publictransit</a> <a href="/tags/torontozoo/" rel="tag">#torontozoo</a> <a href="/tags/toronto/" rel="tag">#toronto</a> <a href="/tags/monorail/" rel="tag">#monorail</a></p>

<p>FYI - The Monterey-Salinas IT department issued a RFI (Request For Information) this last Friday to gather data ahead of plans to replace our closed, proprietary GoPass Bus Pass with one that uses an open, non-proprietary cEMV solution.</p><p>RFI <a href="/tags/26/" rel="tag">#26</a>-01 can be found here.</p><p><a href="https://mst.org/about-mst/procurement/" rel="nofollow"><span class="invisible">https://</span>mst.org/about-mst/procurement/</a></p><p> <a href="/tags/publictransportation/" rel="tag">#PublicTransportation</a> <a href="/tags/publictransit/" rel="tag">#PublicTransit</a> <a href="/tags/opentechnology/" rel="tag">#OpenTechnology</a> <a href="/tags/openstandards/" rel="tag">#OpenStandards</a></p><p>(I'll be adding to this thread as I get time today on why this matters)</p>
<p>Out for a bike ride around Lake Merritt on a beautiful day in Oakland today, I *very* slowly approached a group of three elderly women walking toward me on the shared mixed-use path section, so they could safely pass while I waited for space.</p><p>(Yes, there are separated bike lanes, but they just abruptly end and route you back onto the shared path: <a href="https://www.oaklandca.gov/Government/Oakland-Improvement-Projects/Lakeshore-Avenue-Separated-Bike-Lanes-Project" rel="nofollow" class="ellipsis" title="www.oaklandca.gov/Government/Oakland-Improvement-Projects/Lakeshore-Avenue-Separated-Bike-Lanes-Project"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">www.oaklandca.gov/Government/O</span><span class="invisible">akland-Improvement-Projects/Lakeshore-Avenue-Separated-Bike-Lanes-Project</span></a>)</p><p>One of the women complained to me "why do we have all these bike lanes if you ride here anyway?"</p><p>So... I circled back and politely explained to her that the bike lane ended back behind us, and that I encourage her to vote for more bike lanes so I can stay out of her way.</p><p>Her friend was visibly amused, and another passerby stopped to affirm I was in the right, and literally fist-bumped me, so I'm delighted to have done my small part for cycling advocacy today <img src="https://neodb.social/media/emoji/social.lol/prami_contented.png" class="emoji" alt=":prami_contented:" title=":prami_contented:"></p><p>---</p><p>Without a *connected* network of *protected* bike lanes, most people simply won't ride bikes! You wouldn't drive a car without a connected network of streets either!</p><p>Always remember <a href="/tags/cardependency/" rel="tag">#CarDependency</a> has us fighting each other over table scraps. It's a simple (and *solved*) geometry problem.</p><p><a href="/tags/carfree/" rel="tag">#CarFree</a> <a href="/tags/urbanism/" rel="tag">#Urbanism</a> <a href="/tags/publictransit/" rel="tag">#PublicTransit</a> <a href="/tags/walkablecities/" rel="tag">#WalkableCities</a> <a href="/tags/cycling/" rel="tag">#Cycling</a> <a href="/tags/biketooter/" rel="tag">#BikeTooter</a></p>
