My linocut portrait of Rosalind Franklin (1920 – 1958), in a gradient of magenta from her shoulders up through dark blue to her hair. Her necklace is a double helix of DNA. Her brooch is the Tobacco Mosaic Virus. The pattern on her jacket is based on her publication of the structure of non-graphitizing carbon. ⁠ Behind her in shades of robin’s egg blue is an image of the famous X-ray crystallographic Photo 51, produced by her grad student Gosling and important to deducing the structure of DNA.

The zoom on the abstract collage shows the two wooden sticks and the embroidered real grey lichen on a background of textile scraps and intuitive embroidery. One stick is lemon tree without bark, the stick with bark is cobered with a bright orange lichen. This colour is repeated in the stitches on the real grey lichen.

<p>I love the locally owned print shop I found. I can take my bristol paper to them to print on, and the ink does not smudge. Finally was able to test it with watercolor last night, and yeah, I can totally use them as a basis for multimedia experiments :). Page one of my zine about carnivorous plants and wetland ecology. A Venus flytrap sits in a pink pot with a dog collar on it reading "Fido", but spelled p h y d e a x. I can't believe I've gotten this far without realizing I left out the u that was in my cat's name, to have an ending like bordeaux. All this time. Sigh. It stays. Anyway, bright and sunny light framed by a blue window curtain with yellow polka dots, and purple carpet. Pen and ink on Bristol paper, with colored pencil, altered just a tad digitally. The added words read:
Ah, Dionaea muscipula, the Venus flytrap. One of the most delightful plants one could ever meet. Leaves reach out with blushing traps open like baby birds in a nest, rewarding you with a toothy grin when you offer a snack. They seem more like pets than plants, with just enough darkness to be exciting, and enough science to be fascinating.

But, why do they eat? Is it really like eating? Is it only simple bloodthirst? Or something more?

A two page comparison of my page on Photosynthesis. A venus flytrap rests in moss, microscopic cross sections showing the cellular structures related to photosynthesis. These are the background images without text included. The online zine currently features art with me playing around digitally until I get the final artwork scanned in for some kind of graphic novel looking thing.

The pores the leaves breathe through, called stomata, of a venus flytrap leaf behind a green bottle fly perched on a hungry trap. Pen and ink with colored pencil. Buncha green with a splash of red on the fly eyes and peeking through the teeth of the trap.

The reference pic I used for the stomata illustration. That fly didn't make it.

Bogs are not the only wetlands that exist. Pocasins, also called evergreen shrub bogs, are bogs on hills. They might not have standing water, but will have a shallow water table that keeps the soil saturated most of the year. There are also tidal marshes, non-tidal marshes, swamps, and fens. Each has unique conditions that can affect what species live there, such as salt content or how acidic the water is.

Unique conditions can lead to unique species, many of them fascinating and beautiful. The long-leaf pine savannas of the Carolinas are filled with orchids, sundews, and pitcher plants as well as the Venus Flytraps, and many other species found nowhere else in the world. They are a valuable part of the ecology of the Atlantic Coastal Plain of the United states, which reaches from southern Virginia to northern Florida.

Peatlands are difficult for humans to build upon, therefore are becoming more and more necessary to wildlife fleeing urban sprawl. Many species of birds have adapted to living in peatlands. They offer a variety of habitats from open grass to shrubs and trees, and can shelter everything from forest dwelling birds to waterfowl, who can feed on shrimp, clams, crab, and oysters. Not only birds fleeing urban sprawl can shelter here, but migrating birds often make wetlands a regular rest stop.

The acidity of the water means not many amphibians like them, with a few exceptions such as the leopard frog, spotted salamander, and wood frogs. A few turtles and snake species can be found as well. These wetlands are full of insects though, and they thrive. This is good news for breeding birds, even seed eating species need insects for protein to feed to their young.

Wetlands benefit humans as well. They can prevent flooding inland, provide a reservoir that filters water into local aquifers for our well and city water, cleaning it of pollutants for our consumption, and clean the water coming from the land of silt, pollutants, and debris that can damage river and ocean ecosystems.

Unfortunately, wetlands are on the decline. Some are drained for agricultural use and commercial property, and many companies want to get their hands on peat and don’t worry about how long it took the wetland above the peat to form, or what a valuable resource the wetlands themselves are.

With urban sprawl pushing wildlife into these areas already, the shrinking habitat means fierce competition for food and breeding space. Native species are getting crowded out. Many wetland species are at risk, including several species of carnivorous plants.
