There is a person I've been helping for a while who runs two instances, one #GoToSocial and one #snac.

Yesterday, they suffered severe file system corruption on their device, and I lent them a hand with the recovery. For GoToSocial, they restored the DB from the previous backup and got it running again. For snac, although a few files were lost, no action was necessary... it just started back up and did what it had to do, bringing the instance back to full operation.

This goes to show that when software is well-designed and intentionally kept simple, it's also easier to get back up and running when something goes wrong. In this case, snac's "files-only" approach demonstrated excellent resilience.

Wrote a few fuzzing harnesses during my latest vacation to squash some bugs in #snac, a super cool ActivityPub instance.
@grunfink was really nice and quick to fix these bugs; I will contribute more in the future!

I modified my snac to see how much effort it would be to add a "neighborhood" section. Turns out it wasn't very hard!

How it works:

You add a list of hosts to the "neighborhood" key of your server.json
A neighborhood link appears that you can then use to browse
This link shows a list of all public posts of a selected instance. It's a subset of the "Federated" timeline.

What's your preferred clients for the Unix terminal (must be cross-platform, not Linux-only, for goodness, sake! 😅) and Android?

I've noticed that @tut and @pachli (and other @Tusky forks) don't quite like snac, and tend to act a wee bit cagey. ;)

#snac finally sends me push notifications!

Two things you can see here... It's pretty hot! That's why I stayed home and implemented a missing feature into snac. That's what you can also see - it finally sends push notifications to devices! In this case, we can see notifications coming from #MastoBlaster App for iPhone.

What we can also see, it's still a bit faulty and not the expected content, but a first success here at least ;) I'll make some further adjustments when there's time and get in touch with @grunfink to check if we can get this upstream. Thanks to @stefano for testing with me :)

I've just published version 2.93 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. It includes the following changes:

Added a new admirations entry point to the web UI, containing a timeline of liked, boosted and reacted posts. Please take note that, after installing the new version, it will start empty, and be filled with subsequent reactions (contributed by violette).

It's now possible to disable showing posts in a given set of languages.

Nested quoted posts are limited up to 3 levels.

New configuration knob: by setting keep_replies_posts to true in server.json, remote posts that a local user has replied to are retained in the public timeline, preventing them from being purged (contributed by hanchan).

Ensure actors' public key PEM never includes anything after the end marker.

Fixed some memory leaks (contributed by inz).

Mastodon API: fixed lost custom emojis after edition (contributed by e0w0e).

Updated French, Brazilian Portuguese, German, Spanish translations (contributed by dragondaddy, daltux, zen).

Earlier this week I migrated my mastodon.social account to a self hosted snac instance. And I have just upgraded to snac 2.93. Very pleased with the results! #snac

I kept fat-thumbing when trying to open content warning'd/hidden posts on me phone...but I realised I can just edit the style.css to add a bigger margin. I should probably check out some of the proper stylesheets people have made (but there is something very rad about the default theme)

Adding the neighborhood feed to snac has been great as a curated “public” tab. I wonder if I can expose it as a list so it shows up on the clients. It's a shame I can only use it on web.
