My wife’s work computer desktop background changed itself today, and she called me in to see it. I said, “that’s a Saw Whet.” Not believing me, she looked up the credits and said, “get out! It is!”

I owe it all to !superbowl. I couldn’t have identified even a Snowy before this community.

Travel photo from Florida this year, my good friends introduced me to their Eastern Screech Owl friend “Sol”

One of the most beautiful owls I have ever seen! 😍

I took this photo last month about an hour outside of Paris in France. I went to this spot looking for barn owls and stumbled on this guy, which was a hell of a treat! I did see the barn owls in the end but it was too dark to take a decent shot without a tripod. They were super close too, one flew over my head making a ghostly rolling screech. It was magical.

I also heard a tawny owl nearby! Not sure what it is about that particular village but owls seem to be major fans. I’ll definitely be heading back!

Two happy re-nested EASOs

These two nestling Eastern Screech Owls were admitted separately to our hospital after each was found fallen from their nests. After an intake exam, they were each found to be healthy and uninjured after their falls and were placed in an incubator together. One of the owl’s parents was still in the area but the nest was destroyed, so our staff got creative and used this basket and zip ties to make a new nest for the pair. Our team has been monitoring the nest closely and found the parents have returned to the new nest to care for the nestlings!

We love when we can successfully reunite a family! Baby birds take a lot of time and care to raise. Please never try to raise a baby bird on your own and always contact your closest wildlife rehabilitator if you find a displaced or injured nestling.

An Eastern Screech Owl, Megascops asio, starts up out from its hole and prepares to launch out into the night to hunt. Note his big, dilated pupils. Taken at a favorite location in a big valley in northeast Ohio.

I went there late Sunday afternoon, looking for screech owls sunning themselves. Surprisingly I didn’t find any.

I talked to several birders, and they assured me that this owl in particular was pretty reliable.

Just after the last other person left the area, the little owl appeared in his hole, right at sunset. He flew off about 20 minutes later, and this was the last frame I captured-at very low shutter speed, when it was quite dark.

The unexpected often happens…

When I looked into its eyes, I could hardly believe it - but there it was, sitting less than 20 meters in front of me - the eagle owl, Europe’s largest owl, and right here in Gronau. I actually wanted to go into the forest to see if the hawk chicks had flown their nests.

Suddenly, I saw a shadow flying silently past in the corner of my eye (I thought it was a buzzard at first). I quickly turned my gaze and began systematically scanning the area.

The songbirds were noticeably raising the alarm, and even the jay was screeching loudly. I quickly found the reason - and I was very surprised!

Please don’t ask any questions about the location - it will remain secret.
