Me: I'm gonna write #openzfsmastery in order. No bouncing around in the manuscript, just clean text from beginning to end!
Also me: My test host needs the new compatibility flag for the root pool. I guess I better jump ahead four chapters and write that.

New blog post!
This is the longest one in quite a while.
Last year, I held a presentation about the basics of Active Directory pentesting, focusing on "quick wins", easy to exploit vulnerabilities with huge impact.
I turned that presentation into a blog post.
The result is a surface-level overview of some of the most severe Active Directory vulnerabilities.
I hope it can be useful for aspiring pentesters and Active Directory admins alike.

This one beats them all and it’s going to make me laugh until tonight:
“I’ve been assigned to carry out a penetration test on a server you manage. The test will be performed from the outside, since the perimeter security needs to be assessed. In order to perform the test, I therefore ask you to disable any firewall, protection, blacklist. If any of these are in place, the server might not be reachable and could prevent the assessment.”
I had to read it three times just to make sure I’d understood it properly.
I'm looking for a freelancer or org who can help me set two Ghost instances in one virtual server, with ActivityPub. Only setting up the instances and the server, I can handle the web administration.
I'm almost there with the first instance but at every step there is something, I'm not a sysadmin, and I'm losing my patience. 😅 I bet this is straightforward for someone with experience.
I can give you more details -- and see https://the.socialmusic.network/t/a-music-selection-idea-welcomes-your-feedback/854
OK, here we go. The 4th run of the Tunnel training.
Learn best-practice server security & computer networking fundamentals while building up your own high-performance, censorship-resistant VPN in Iceland. Generate configs as easy-to-use QR codes to give out to friends, family & your activist mates to protect them in this mad era of runaway surveillance, automated attacks and account theft.

With Apple phasing out AFP in macOS 27 and Time Capsules officially reaching end-of-life, it's time to move network backups to proper SMB.
If you run a FreeBSD server, you can build a fast, rock-solid, and secure Time Machine target powered by ZFS and Samba - neatly isolated inside a FreeBSD jail using Bastille.

Keep your macOS backups running smoothly via SMBv3 (with full vfs_fruit support) and full dataset quota control on ZFS!

There is a person I've been helping for a while who runs two instances, one #GoToSocial and one #snac.
Yesterday, they suffered severe file system corruption on their device, and I lent them a hand with the recovery. For GoToSocial, they restored the DB from the previous backup and got it running again. For snac, although a few files were lost, no action was necessary... it just started back up and did what it had to do, bringing the instance back to full operation.
This goes to show that when software is well-designed and intentionally kept simple, it's also easier to get back up and running when something goes wrong. In this case, snac's "files-only" approach demonstrated excellent resilience.
Thanks, @grunfink !

Oh happy day!
This newbie #sysadmin is VERY HAPPY because in less than 5 minutes I:
installed tmux (thank you for the recommendation & instructions @teapot_ben and @drfyzziks)
upgraded PeerTube from Terminal using tmux
now the stakes weren't super high because I did this for my second VPS which is running test apps... the real challenge will be to do this on my primary VPS and my in-production PeerTube instance.
Grabbing another coffee, taking a VPS snapshot and trying this.
As always THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT. I couldn't do this without you 💖
Oh but the larger point in this message was to vouch for tmux - it really is super beginner friendly. I know NOTHING and I was able to easily install it and use it. So you could recommend it to your normie friends for sure ☺️
THE TAGGING MODEL
Many desktop environments organize windows using rigid workspaces:
Workspace 1
Workspace 2
Workspace 3
dwm uses a different model, treating workspaces as bitmask labels (tags).
This allows a single window instance to hold multiple tags simultaneously,
acting as a persistent visual anchor across different contexts:
Firefox -> Tag 1 (Web Browsing)
st (nvi/dev) -> Tag 2 (Code/Scripts)
st (Monitor/Logs) -> Tag 1 + Tag 2 (Persistent)
switch to Tag 2, the browser disappears, but the exact same log window
remains on screen, now sharing space with your text editor.
The application is never duplicated or restarted in memory.
The UI remains minimal while enabling workflows that are difficult to
express using traditional workspace-oriented desktops.
Two decades later, this tagging model remains one of the most
distinctive features of dwm.

I've been using Cachet for our status page for a long time now but unfortunately it seems to keep getting abandoned and I don't have the skill (or the time) to try to fix the issues in the upstream version that keep causing glitches for us.
Has anyone got any recommendations for good self hosted status page software like Cachet that doesn't depend on being populated by automated monitoring data / similar. I just want a way to post the status myself and show an overview of the various services.

Hey #InfoSec #SysAdmin folks, anybody heard of ShredOS?
Seems like a potentially useful tool, but the website looks sus:

The GitHub repo seems a bit less sus:

does anyone have any suggestions for people/things/hasthags to follow here on the fediverse?
had this account set up for a while but i haven't used it much. would like to have interesting things to see when i check it every once in a while

Have you ever tried to dictate someone a private IPv4 address in French 🇫🇷 ?
I'm now pretty certain that whoever said "Let's use 192.168... subnets for this" did that to annoy - or as a gigantic prank. And I salute you for it.

Solution? My mouse rings have finally arrived.

Well folks, as of Friday, I'll be unemployed. To be clear, this is by choice not by force. The toxicity of my current workplace made it more tenable to risk unemployment than to continue in such an environment.
That said, I am actively looking for a new role. During my downtime, I am going to start playing around with this #kubernetes thing that I think might catch on. I'll also be working towards catching myself up with the industry in general, and taking a bit of time to work on myself. If you're in need of a senior #devOps or #sysadmin type person, or someone who can step into a low-level #EngineeringManager role, please reach out. I'm happy to provide my resume or contact information on request.
Zatem jeśli macie jakieś propozycje to chętnie poczytam.
Hey people,
I recently graduated from my #SysAdmin apprenticeship and I am looking for an entry position in the field of #Linux/ #Networking Administration/Engineering or #DevOps in #NRW, #Germany (ideally around #Düsseldorf), or Remote.
As part of the apprenticeship I conducted an internship at a Neuroscience Institute of Research Centre Juelich, where I accomplished my project of automating #OpenBSD routers using #pyinfra #GitOps.

Boosts appreciated 🙏🏻
