<p>Me 2 weeks ago: oh I will just do a post about <a href="/tags/lemmy/" rel="tag">#Lemmy</a> interoperability with the rest of the <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#Fediverse</a> for my blog series <a href="/tags/thefutureisfederated/" rel="tag">#TheFutureIsFederated</a>. <br>How hard can it be? I already federated my Wordpress blog and figured out <a href="/tags/friendica/" rel="tag">#Friendica</a>.</p><p>Me today: I now have accounts on <a href="/tags/lemmy/" rel="tag">#Lemmy</a> PLUS <a href="/tags/piefed/" rel="tag">#PieFed</a> AND <a href="/tags/mbin/" rel="tag">#Mbin</a> because my initial federation tests had mixed results. <p>Dear Fedi friends,<br><br>I&#x27;m really proud to share with you a video I made: &quot;Introducing the Fediverse: a New Era of Social Media&quot; <a href="https://news.elenarossini.com/fediverse-video/" rel="nofollow" class="ellipsis" title="news.elenarossini.com/fediverse-video/"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">news.elenarossini.com/fedivers</span><span class="invisible">e-video/</span></a><br><br>In this 4-minute video I explain what the <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#fediverse</a> is to people not familiar with it, mentioning some of its great features and benefits (interoperability, no ads, no surveillance...) and I set it in contrast to the world of Big Tech social platforms. I argue that, with the rise of Big Tech oligarchs and the current political climate, there has never been a better time to join the fediverse.<br><br>I hope you will enjoy this video and that you will find it useful (maybe as a tool to introduce your friends, family, colleagues, school administrators, local government officials to it).<br><br>The fediverse has truly changed my life, making me a better, more empowered digital citizen. What happened?<br><br>Well well well, the unexpected victim of my viral toot / video was... my beloved <a href="/tags/gotosocial/" rel="tag">#GoToSocial</a> account.<br><br>Approximately 12 hours after posting about my video - a toot that got 1200+ boosts - for some reason federation broke on this account. I was still posting messages and replying but getting zero interactions.<br><br>So yesterday evening, thanks to the amazing help of people on the GoToSocial Matrix help room, I was told to upgrade to the latest version of GoToSocial. Total game changer. I could not recommend it more! <p>The other day I finally got it. Why <a href="/tags/bluesky/" rel="tag">#Bluesky</a> is so popular with &quot;regular people&quot; (aka non-techies). It&#x27;s because it&#x27;s CENTRALIZED (of course the Bluesky folks would never admit it out right).</p><p>One name: Bluesky.<br>One official URL to join / browse / post messages<br>One official app: &quot;Bluesky Social&quot; on app stores</p><p>In this post-literate society where people have been trained by commercial social media for 2 DECADES to choose the easiest, most frictionless option, of course they will pick Bluesky over the <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#Fediverse</a>.</p><p>Try introducing the concept of servers / instances and names like Mastodon, Sharkey, Pleroma, GoToSocial, Friendica, Pixelfed, PeerTube, Lemmy to people not familiar with them. They&#x27;d think you&#x27;re speaking a foreign language.</p><p>The Fediverse is made up of thousands of independent servers. You can&#x27;t log in to <a href="https://joinmastodon.org" rel="nofollow"><span class="invisible">https://</span>joinmastodon.org</a> or <a href="https://joinpeertube.org" rel="nofollow"><span class="invisible">https://</span>joinpeertube.org</a> to browse Mastodon or PeerTube. Conversely, when you log into Bluesky you see messages by Bluesky members.</p><p>People need to be educated first about defederated options and their numerous advantages.</p><p>I get it now. I&#x27;m still 1000% in when it comes to the Fediverse but I understand.</p><p>And I&#x27;m tired.</p><p>And I&#x27;m posting this here on my GoToSocial account because I wanted to say my piece in one go and I would have run into Mastodon character limits.</p><p>How many people have I convinced to join the Fediverse in my 9 months advocating for it through a blog? TWO. How many people are still active on it? One.</p><p>Off I go play with LEGOs with my little one - in 12 years, when she&#x27;s old enough I will set up her own instance. <p>My experience of the <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#fediverse</a> :</p><p>Year 1 (2023): <br>It feels a little lonely as 99% of my friends stayed on Big Tech platforms.</p><p>Year 2 (2024): <br>I start a blog - <a href="/tags/thefutureisfederated/" rel="tag">#TheFutureIsFederated</a> - to explain the fediverse to &quot;normies&quot;... and I make a lot of new (techie) friends.</p><p>Year 3 (2025):<br>My techie friends encourage me to start self-hosting with <a href="/tags/yunohost/" rel="tag">#YunoHost</a>... and I do! (GoToSocial, PeerTube, NextCloud...) I LOVE it.</p><p>Year 4 (2026):<br>I plan to buy a Heltec to try out off-grid mesh radio communication 💁‍♀️</p>
