《四大名捕会京师》是作者二十岁前期作品，成文以来(至2005年)，在不同的国家地区里，拥有五十种不同的版本，和超过十五家报刊杂志转载发表过，改编次数最多(包括电视剧、漫画、电玩)，迄今未衰。 温瑞安先生这本包括了五个短篇的经典之作，对武侠文坛的影响力，到今天仍惊雷处处，方兴未艾。存他之前，武侠小说不管写“侠”与“盗”都人才辈出，但对“侠”“盗”之间维持世间法理正义的“名捕”，却要自温瑞安始，才笔夺了天工，并开了“武侠推理”之先河。
“天下四大名捕”，系指：无情、铁手、追命、冷血四人。“天下四大名捕”都是武林中的数一数二的好手，各人有各人过人之能。人人俱有两手绝技。这四人的名宇，正如这四人的行事。
