Two young Hong Kong activists reflect on their resistance against China, are forced to decide between long-term imprisonment and refugee camps for a life in exile, while their movement inspires mass protests in the city they love.

In February 2019, the Hong Kong government proposed a bill that would have allowed the extradition of criminal suspects from Hong Kong to face trial in mainland China. The controversial bill sparked immediate outrage over widespread fear of arbitrary detention and politically motivated trials that would decimate Hong Kong's autonomy under 'one country, two systems.' Protests escalated into epic pro-democracy demonstrations, in part led by young people connected via social media. COCKROACH, filmed during the height of the protests, captures the extraordinary intensity of an unprecedented era in Hong Kong's history.

若欲整理香港抗爭歷史，抗爭者在理工大學被警察圍堵的十多天必定是重要的里程碑，因為那是港人經歷過最心痛無力的時刻。觀看《紅磚危城》就如重溫一切警暴片段，是一個自揭傷口的過程，唯獨在事過境遷後會發現，政府的暴力不只在於他們對一群從未經訓練的年輕人出動軍事模式的攻擊，更在於他們對程序的執著和崇拜而產生的冷血無情。此片將警方的說話紀錄的相對完整，他們一面對被困的人冷嘲熱諷，一面以官僚式手段打發前來提供法律援助的人離開，以執法為名，把抗爭者逼向絕路。同時間，理大內的抗爭者有時自尋娛樂，有時笨拙地逃生和爭執的片段卻展現了最強的生命力，這或是所有香港人今後都必須堅守的力量。

Taking us from Hong Kong's 1997 handover from British rule into Chinese administrative control, all the way to 2019, when a controversial extradition bill is greeted with massive street protests, this urgent film beds in with Hong Kong's pro-democracy demonstrations, offering a frontline portrait of four young protesters through a year of struggle. We see their hopes for a freer life and feel their fears as the authorities crack down. Pulse-racing scenes bring the viewer to street level, where peaceful protest is met with fury and tear gas. Clear-eyed about the complications and contradictions that come with a movement that changed Hong Kong forever, Hong Kong: City on Fire is a brave document of troubled times.

Behind the gas masks of Hong Kong’s democracy movement, the often very young activists are just as diverse as the youths of the rest of the world. But they share a demand for democracy and freedom. They have the will and the courage to fight – and they can see that things are going in the wrong direction in the small island city, which officially has autonomy under China but is now tightening its grip and demanding that ‘troublemakers’ be put away or silenced. Amid the violent protests, we meet a 21-year-old student, a teenage couple and a new father.

Echoing with voices from the streets of Hong Kong, "Love in the Time of Revolution" documents the passion, spirit and sacrifice of ordinary Hong Kongers during a time of political and social upheaval. In 2019, Hong Kong government plans to introduce a law permitting the extradition of criminal suspects to Mainland China sparked a mass protest movement unprecedented in scale. The people of Hong Kong marched - 1 million strong, then 2 million - to save what they saw as the city's eroding freedoms and rule of law. When their demands went unheeded, the protests intensified, and the streets of Hong Kong became soaked in tear gas and blood as valiant frontline protesters clashed with riot police. Behind the frontliners stood a peaceful silent majority, committed to a hard-won solidarity as they attempt to save the city that they love.

At the forefront of most of Hong Kong’s demonstrations, ‘frontliners’ (aka ‘the valiant’, yung mo in Cantonese) are the black-clad, masked, often armed youth willing to use violence against the HK government and its heavily-armed police force. Willis Ho’s remarkably revealing doc approaches from the inside, giving them voices and offering understanding, not judgment.

30 years after 1989, how do witnesses to the June 4th Tiananmen massacre come to terms with their own memories, and how do their memories affect their lives today? At the same time, Hong Kong gradually confronts the explosion of the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement.

進入瘋狂的2020年，尚未走出抗爭陰霾，疫情又籠罩香港，創傷的年輕人依舊走上街頭，但街景不復當初；在餐廳偶遇低調吃飯的殺人犯陳同佳，咄咄逼問下，其實異地殺人之罪，也不全然是反送中的肇因；失業情侶為了防疫四處張羅口罩，最後找出上街頭的防毒面具……。當生活變成生存，日常竟如此荒謬，整個社會的死亡陰影是來自政權，還是疫症？



香港錄像藝術家許雅舒繼描繪佔中運動的《風景》後，延續社運主題並積極試探敘事的可能性，《日常》融合了劇情、紀錄與歷史切片，刻劃香港人於社會動盪下的命運，跟著真實人物、虛構角色、新聞、舊聞剪報，重現已逝去的記憶和歷史，記錄下歷經狂風暴雨，依然等待陽光普照的日常。
