The elderly Shukishi and his wife, Tomi, take the long journey from their small seaside village to visit their adult children in Tokyo. Their elder son, Koichi, a doctor, and their daughter, Shige, a hairdresser, don't have much time to spend with their aged parents, and so it falls to Noriko, the widow of their younger son who was killed in the war, to keep her in-laws company.

Japan is thrown into a panic after several ships are sunk near Odo Island. An expedition to the island led by Dr. Yemani soon discover something far more devastating than imagined in the form of a 50 meter tall monster whom the natives call Gojira. Now the monster begins a rampage that threatens to destroy not only Japan, but the rest of the world as well.

利江は陸軍大尉鬼頭範太郎の家へ女中奉公に出た。やがて利江は範太郎に手ごめにされて身ごもり、範太郎の病妻つたは一郎司、剛次郎の二児を残して死ぬ。範太郎は、ただ、世間体だけから利江を後添えにしたが、雇い女としてしか取扱おうとせず、一郎司、剛次郎にも、お利江と呼ばせ続ける。やがて十年の歳月が流れ、範太郎は連隊長、一郎司は陸士、剛次郎は幼年学校に在学、利江の生んだ良利は十二歳、智秀は六歳、そして利江は脂ののった女盛りになっていた。範太郎は依然として利江を虐げ、良利、智秀をも異母兄達ときびしく差別した。台所の片隅、そこが利江たちに与えられた部屋だった。それからまた十年。範太郎は少将で予備役となり、在郷軍人会の分会長をしていた。一郎司、剛次郎とも出征した。相次ぐ二人の勝報は範太郎にとり最上の誇りだった。良利も海軍少尉となり出征した。中学四年になった智秀は学業はできたが病弱だった。そうした智秀を軍人の家の面汚しと感じている範太郎は、ますます智秀を虐げた。新しい女中のハルは、親身に智秀をいたわった。智秀はハルの部屋に憩いの場所を見つけた。二人の心は急速に結びついて行ったが、範太郎に感づかれて智秀は勘当された。婆やの実家に預けられた智秀は、ハルが身売りされたことを知り、その面影を求めて家出する。そして終戦－－。出征した三人とも戦死し、範太郎はすっかりうつけてしまった。利江に家財道具を売り払わせては、飲みふけた。そんなある日、飯場を渡り歩いていた智秀が帰ってきた。利江は狂喜した。が範太郎は寄せつけなかった。噴きあげる怒りに利江は初めて範太郎を見据えて言った。「智秀はあなたの子です。私ばかりの子ではありません。……もう言わせてもらいます。……私はもう女中ではありません！」
