This episodic documentary film builds a portrait of European workers. In our film, we travel and follow the journey of a canned food product and it′s ingredients across Europe. Along the journey the ordinary workers all over the continent tell their dreams and stories about the most important moments in their lives. Behind this one product there are numerous hands and the can itself is metaphor for multicultural Europe.
CANNED DREAMS presents the absurdity of food production in Europe. Behind the product are uncountable number of workers and their stories from multiple cultures.
Each worker that contributes towards the product tells their own story about their everyday life, turning points in their past and moments that have stopped and touched them. The stories are full of joy and sadness.
In the film we see production chain from the beginning to the end and follow the route of the product through Europe. The wheat is grown in huge Ukrainian wheat fields and transported to a French factory where the pasta dough is prepared. Tomatoes come from Portugal, pork meat from Denmark, beef from Poland, eggs from France and olive oil from Italy. The final product is manufactured and canned in France and then transported to a shelf of a supermarket in Finland.
The film features seven ingredients, seven main characters and seven strong stories from different countries. The characters' ages and backgrounds vary and their stories will touch diverse spheres of life at the same time being universal and reaching out to people anywhere in the world.

Every seventh person in the world is a Chinese farmer. Between 2002 and 2005 the filmmakers Elke Groen and Ina Ivanceaneau carried out numerous interviews in three Chinese villages documenting everyday life - without any censorship whatsoever. The deterioration of a small community in Fogo Island is forcing its inhabitants to leave and resettle. Places once occupied by humans are now becoming part of the tundra landscape. In spite of a condemn future, there are some residents who decide to remain, holding on to their memories and grieving for the past, when life in Fogo was different.

Luisa, a 25-year-old woman addicted to chiva (heroin), travels to a beach in the coastal State of Veracruz with the idea of quitting the drug once she gets there. Luisa eventually grows ties with the locals and in particular with Salomon, a 65-years-old peasant in whom she thinks to have found the aid she needs to fulfill her goal.
