格拉西姆爱上了帮工姑娘，姑娘也钟情于他，谁料女主人闲来无聊乱点鸳鸯谱，上演一出“棒打有情人”，仿佛农奴只需要繁衍，而无爱之需求。伤心之余的格拉西姆捡到一条小狗，饲养宠爱，成为他生活下去的唯一凭藉，亦得不到假心慈悲的女主人许可。他只得亲手勒死无辜的小狗、远走他乡。地位与感情的不对等，使得格拉西姆看来分外悲怆，难道他就没有付出感情的权利了吗？而那些满口仁义的人，却连一只小动物都不肯放过，最是令人愤恨。
这部电影讲述了粗糙的人所拥有的细腻感情，但他却囿于低贱身份，除了一身气力无所凭恃，终究被人横刀夺爱。格拉西姆的农奴出身，预示了他不可能掌控自己的命运，一切都在贵族女主人的一己好恶中被剥夺。屠格涅夫本人出身贵族家庭，却在小说《木木》里狠狠嘲讽了一把病怏怏且自我中心的贵妇人作风，这作风也是太过随心所欲，那附属其上的农奴和女工们完全像蚂蚁一样，任其摆布。据说这贵妇人原型就是屠格涅夫的母亲，格拉西姆也确有其人，是他们家的一个聋哑看门人。
本片忠实地还原了格拉西姆的隐忍与无奈，惜字幕暂缺，但读过《木木》朋友，可以在影像中拾得一份熟悉的牵挂。
