Brittany, France, 1980s. A group of friends, fed up with the boring country life and eager for excitement, create a radio station.

Ukrainian surgeon Serhiy is captured by the Russian military forces in the conflict zone in Eastern Ukraine and while in captivity, he is exposed to horrifying scenes of humiliation, violence and indifference towards human life. After his release, he returns to his comfortable middle-class apartment and tries to find a purpose in life by rebuilding his relationship with his daughter and ex-wife. He learns how to be a human being again, how to be a father and help his daughter, who needs his love and support.

In 1877, in a watch factory in a valley in north-western Switzerland, Josephine produces balance spindles, tiny parts that ensure the agitation movement ("unrueh") of the mechanical watches. She soon grows uneasy with the organisation of work and possession in the village and its factory and joins the anarchist worker movement of the local watchmakers. There she meets Piotr Kropotkin, a moony Russian traveller. The two of them meet at a time when new technologies such as time measurement, photography and the telegraph are transforming the social order and anarchist discourse is addressing emerging nationalism. During a walk in the woods, Josephine and Piotr ask themselves whether time, money and the government are not all but fictions.

Vera is a middle-aged sign language interpreter, whose life is disrupted by her husband's suicide who has to face the raw reality of going against the deep-seated gender issues of our times.

The switch of perspective, previously demonstrated by Romanian animator Anca Damian in L’extraordinaire voyage de Marona in 2018 – in which a dying dog reflects on his owners – also drives The Island. Here, Robinson Crusoe is not a desperate marooned sailor, but someone who voluntarily wiles away his days on an island. One day, Friday washes ashore – the sole survivor from a boat full of people trying to reach Italy. Criminals, border guards, and mermaids follow.
The result is not so much an indictment, as an absurd animation set to music which, in Damian’s own apt words, is a mix of The Little Prince, Robinson Crusoe, and Monty Python. The most bizarre scenes pass across the screen and merge together. In short, a film powered by wild free association, comic observation, and visual poetry.
