The sons of Elizabeth Paetzold reveal, little by little, what they have in common. And their story is a real, living history lesson of Pomerania - throughout history inhabited by Kashubians, Germans & Poles. Over twenty years had to pass before their true identities were confirmed. All the sons were born in the Paetzold family country manor - a formerly German area of Pomerania, near Danzig, which became Polish again & definitely-so after mid 1945, just 9 months after the last of the brothers was born. Elizabeth could only take 2 of the children out of the area before the Red Army took over. The other children remained in Polish orphanages, 2 of them adopted by Polish families. During this meeting, what the brothers call their "last reunion" - the eldest was born in 1938 & the youngest in late 1944, interviews with all the sons, their wives, partner, children, in-laws & neighbors participate...

The film tells the story of three young people in Berlin during the 1930s. Magdalena and Michael are in love. Jürgen, the third one, eventually comes to term with the Nazis because he wants to live in peace. Michael and Magdalena on the other hand want to put up resistance. Then, Michael gets arrested and is sentenced to 15 years in jail. When Magdalena also gets in danger, Jürgen helps her although he has become a member of the SA in the meantime. During the war, Michael is sent to a penal battalion. At the front, he and Jürgen meet again and both desert to the Red Army. But the film does not reveal if there will be a reunion with Magdalena who by now also fights for the Red Army.

Shot in complete darkness during 16 straight hours in an original World War II bunker, the only light source is Christoph Schlingensief's flashlight guiding Voxi Bärenklau's camera through the controlled chaos. Neither cast nor crew were allowed to go outside until the film was finished. Laying the groundwork for Schlingensief's later works on- and off-stage as well as his TV Shows (U3000, Talk 2000), "100 Years Adolf Hitler" is a key film in Schlingensief's artistic oeuvre; enabling the viewer to witness the unfolding of an aura, it is perhaps the closest Schlingensief ever came to Direct Cinema.

Based on years of research into the mass rapes committed by the Red Army at the end of the Second World War. In the first part of the documentary Helke Sander interviews multiple German women who were raped in Berlin by Soviet soldiers in May 1945. Most women never spoke of their experience to anyone, after 46 years of silence they talk for the first time publicly about their violent experiences that have left such a mark.

The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich; his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.

This movie deals with a young soldier of the German army during World War II. Being one of the best pilots of the Luftwaffe, he receives the ultimate decoration from the hands of Hitler: the Diamond Swords. After the ceremony, Hitler tells him about his plans of holocaust and mass murder. The young soldier remains shocked by this interview and Hitler's aims. He meets an attractive Swedish woman working for the Red Cross and he quickly falls in love with her. Actually, she's part of an underground organization working against the Nazi regime. They finally go to Italy, where he's meant to receive another decoration by Mussolini. There, an Italian officer explains him that his last name "Avignon" has Jew origins...

It’s the late 1950s, and in an affluent and quietly respectable part of Buenos Aires, young Sulamit Löwenstein strikes up a friendship with her next-door neighbour Friedrich over the whereabouts of her family dog. She is the daughter of German-Jewish immigrants to Argentina, he is the son of a senior SS officer, a tragic political legacy from whose shadow both characters struggle to escape over the next three decades. Following the teenaged Friedrich to Germany, Sulamit finds him caught up in the radical politics of late-1960s student life; and she’s forced to make important decisions about her attitude to her homeland when Friedrich returns to Argentina to join the fight against the military junta.

This films is a satirical parable of post-war Germany presented in retrospect from the year 2048. Gerd Fröbe is the german average citizen 'Otto Normalverbraucher' who returns to Berlin after wartime prison experiences. Back at home he finds black marketeers, reactionaries, he seeks work and food and in the end even finds his 'dreamwoman'. (rough n' ready transl.)

2015 film by Oliver Hirschbiegel

Throughout the film it shows, in the late 1930s, Jewish citizens being taken away by the army or secret police (with rather stirring music). At this moment Klaus Maria watches on and seems to be a little shaken and quietly incensed by these actions. This film gives an insight into, how some germen were clearly against what Hitler was starting to do to their country (those who, in reflection, weren't sucked into the propaganda of a powerful Germany). The love interest with Rebecca Miller and Klaus is nice and subtle with good humour in places. During all this, though, he is building a bomb using his skills as a clock maker, and awaiting Hitler's arrival to the Beer Hall (Munich), -where the story is set. During the building of the bomb and the placing of it, it is full of tension with Klaus appearing extremely determined and nervous with sweat. The acting of Brandauer is suitably magnificant.
