1871 (1990) [Movie] Douban IMDb WikiData TMDB
1871
director: Ken McMullen actor: Timothy Spall / Ian McNeice
Quote:
"1871" is a visually sumptuous, multi-layered treatment of the Paris Commune which was selected for the "Un Certain Regard" section of the 1990 Cannes festival.

Quote:
The bloody history of radical revolutionary movements in France has frequently provoked otherwise reasonable people in other countries to have an unreasoning fear of alternative political movements. In 1871, Napoleon III ruled France in a way that made him very popular with the rich and with aristocrats and would-be aristocrats around the world. In particular, he rigorously suppressed any hint of dissent, and prevented the development of trade unions and socialist political movements. In 1871 there was a bloody uprising which produced a short-lived regime known as "The Paris Commune," founded on principles every bit as radical as anything from the French Revolution of 1789. The story of this time is told from the point of view of the actress Severin (Ana Padrao) and the theater in which she worked. Her favors were sometimes available to those with sufficient funds, and she had two lovers: one, a revolutionary, the other, an English spy. In the end, neither is able to save her.
1917: The Making of a Revolution (2017) [Movie] IMDb TMDB
Lénine, Gorki: la révolution à contretemps
director: Stan Neumann
other title: Lénine, Gorki: la révolution à contretemps
The Russian Revolution of 1917 marked the beginning of a new era, sending shockwaves across the world and overturning political thought. Through the voices of Lenin and Gorky, discover the two faces of the Revolution: the theory and the practice. Let us return to this mixture of exaltation and nervousness that propelled the Revolution's actors. Retrace their steps by using their own words, their outlook. This dual narrative will give a rich perspective: one abrupt, unpredictable, moving– will be Maxim Gorky. The other – as cold as history and tactics, the planning of the next move – will follow Vladimir Illyich Lenin. Both the writer and the revolutionary are haunted by the failure of the last great European revolution, the Paris Commune, 1871. Through exclusive archives and beautiful animation, Stan Neumann will immerse us into the day by day events, from February to October 1917.

1966, My Time in the Red Guards (1993) [Movie] Douban IMDb TMDB
1966,我的红卫兵时代
8.1 (10 ratings) director: 吴文光
other title: 1966:我的红卫兵时代 / 1966, wo de Hongweibing shidai
More preoccupied with "history" than Wu's other works, My Time in the Red Guards is a record of his fascination with the missed moment, Mao's Cultural Revolution. In 1966, the Red Guards ironically represented the official avant-garde, a movement carried forward by youth determined to become heroes of the Revolution. Wu interviews people who had joined the Red Guards as high schoolers, most now successful professionals, some Party members. The miscalculations and cruelties of this extreme cultural campaign are spread out before us, detailed by personal recollection and further illustrated by old agit-prop newsreels. Misgivings and fond remembrance vie for position as the interviewees seem to confuse the nostalgia of youthful action with the excesses of historical fact.

2084 (1985) [Movie] Douban TMDB IMDb
2084: Video clip pour une réflexion syndicale et pour le plaisir
director: 克里斯·马克 actor: 弗朗索瓦·佩里埃
other title: 2084: Video clip pour une réflexion syndicale et pour le plaisir / 2084: Video Clip for the Trade Unions' Reflection and Pleasure
In this short film, which is about ten minutes in length, Marker critiques, from a Socialist perspective, the role of the trade union movement in France at the dawn of the era of global web economies. He argues that trade unions are submissive to society, not the other way around, and in fact, that this century of trade unions will be looked back upon as a transitional period in which barbarism was a commonly used tactic. This can not only be used to describe what began to happen in France at this point in time, but can also be generalized to all advanced neo-liberal societies in which the powers of the "middle class worker" were beginning to be systematically eliminated and suppressed by capitalist oligarchies. Incredibly, Marker calls for something which is only now developing- what is known as social movement unionism. Social movement unions seek to organize all workers no matter what their sector, race, ethnicity, or gender and combine efforts with social organizations to affect public policy thus giving them the power to improve social conditions for all people! They attempt to organize at the local, national and international levels to counter the power of the international corporations that have neo-liberal governments tending to their every whim. Marker is well ahead of his time calling for this- a good 15-20 years! What Marker calls for in this film has become quite evident today- especially with groups like the APL in the Phillipines. Marker's advice is on its way to becoming reality- though as he states in the concluding statement of the film, "And provide we hurry a little it'll take just a century."
