A film that might be regarded as Nicholas Ray's farewell to Hollywood (if not commercial filmmaking), as well as his tribute to Chicago in 20s, this 1958 feature is also one of his most affecting love stories. An unlikely alliance between a crippled and crooked lawyer (Robert Taylor) and a dancing showgirl (Cyd Charisse), both of whom try to escape the power of a tyrannical mobster (Lee J. Cobb), forms the basis for a flamboyant poem in delirious color and scope that is treated with a mixture of violence and lyricism that is unique to Ray.

About the only thing kept in this film from Preston Sturges origianl story for "The Miracle of Morgan's Creek" is a girl that gets drunk, gets married, gets pregnant and doesn't even remember any of it. A major dirrerence is that "The Miracle of Morgan's Creek" was a classic comedy and "Rock-a-Bye Baby" isn't. This time out, Clayton Poole (Jerry Lewis) is a small town TV repairman who is still in love with his former hometown sweetheart, Carla Naples (Marilyn Maxwell), who is now a famous movie queen. When Carla becomes pregnant due to a hasty marriage in Mexico, which she has forgotten about, the studio tells her a baby will ruin her career so she turns to Clayton, the only person she can trust, and he agrees to care for the baby when it is born. Carla gives birth to triplets and Clayton finds he must get married before he can adopt them. He marries Sandy (Connie Stevens), Carla's younger sister who has always loved him. The press learns about Carla's triplets and she tells reporters she is secretly married to Clayton. Clayton, having rapidly gone from no wife and kids to two wives and three kids, goes into hiding. He returns after several months---nine to be exact for those old biddies who are counting---and learns that Sandy has given birth to quintuplets.

This simple story of a mother and daughter finds them struggling to find work and food in Paris. Micheline Bezancon is the expressionless young mother who alone worries about the future of her and her daughter. Filmed in black and white, the directorial approach is as simple as the title. She engages in a poignant narrative about her daily life. Half of the time the screen is black, evoking a feeling of despair that permeates the feature.
Shot in 16 mm in Paris & its suburbs and co-produced by French television on a very low budget. This was inspired by an item on the back page of a newspaper. The essence of the film is captured by its first person voice-over commentary, and was considered "one of the few genuine masterpieces in the entire history of cinema" by film theorist Noel Burch. The film is not available in English translation, either dubbed or subtitled. But it works very well in simultaneous translation, if prepared in advance.

All he displays are facial expressions and a comedic slapstick style. And anything that can go wrong, does go wrong when Stanley is involved. One day, Jerry Lewis arrives at the hotel and some of the staff notice the striking resemblance.
