故事发生在八年抗战时期的上海，小勤丽自幼家境殷实，受到良好教育，还迷上了音乐，一心想成为钢琴家，父亲惠义（姜文 饰）本身是个开明的知识分子，一直支持女儿梦想。但当勤丽长成婚配年龄段少女（屠怀青 饰）时，家中老人却想把她嫁给大资本家的儿子陈有煌，借此联姻挽救岌岌可危的家族生意，重压之下， 惠义只好妥协，勤丽出国深造音乐的梦想破灭，从此父女失和。勤丽出嫁后，受到公婆处处用封建礼教的刁难束缚，还不许她碰钟爱的钢琴，幸好丈夫通情达理，对她支持疼爱，勤丽也慢慢对他产生了感情。战乱动荡，陈家迁居香港，陈有煌染上恶疾，勤丽只得跟随，但也未放弃练琴。时光荏苒，勤丽已经成了旅居巴黎的女钢琴家，举办自己的音乐会时，久未谋面的父亲竟然在过道出现……
