Depicts the bloody siege of the fortress of Port Arthur, one of the most strongly fortified positions in the world, during the Russo-Japanese War of (1904 - 1905). In the story dominated the character Lt Takeshi Kogyo (Teruhiko Aoi), teachers, and a reserve officer who became commander of the platoon and later company. At the same time monitors the conduct of the army commander general Nogi (Tatsuya Nakadai), which was commissioned of the emperor Matsuhito (Toshirô Mifune) to the conquest of the fort.

During World War II, a shot-down American pilot and a marooned Japanese navy captain find themselves stranded on the same small uninhabited island in the Pacific Ocean.

山河燃烧是NHK于1984年1月8日～12月23日制播的第22部大河剧，全51回。
原作是山崎丰子的｢两个祖国｣，是继1980年狮子的时代后，第二度以虚构人物做为主角。故事以日系美国人第二代兄弟为中心，描写其友人与家族在太平洋战争被分裂的悲剧。原作在执笔时取材相当严谨，内容提及日中战争与远东国际军事法庭等史实时都做过采访考证。故事的时代背景与和山崎女士另一部作品大地之子接近，类似于记实小说。是大河剧第一次以昭和时期为主题的作品，也是大河剧“近现代三部作”（另外两部是翌年的“春の波涛/春之波涛”、再翌年的“いのち/命”)里的第一部。

山また山の、東北のある山中に、ダム工事のために出来た急造のバラック建の街が出現した。ある日この街へ無精ヒゲの小杉俊介という大学出の技師が配属されて来た。リウはトラックに小杉を乗せて事務所へ送ってやった。彼女は、母も、土方の親分をしていた父も失ってしまい、松田所長の世話で荒くれた飯場で働いている勝気な娘だった。俊介は着く早々、地盤のゆるみから、犠牲になった人の葬式に立ち会った。多くの人々が犠牲になっている現状を見て、俊介は暗然とするのだった。彼の歓迎宴の席で、俊介は土地の茂吉老人の孫娘で、芸者に売られた雛菊を、街のダニ篠原の手からかばってやったが、雛菊にとって俊介はそれ以来忘れられない人になった。リウや雛菊のひそかな思慕も俊介には東京に陽子という美しい恋人があるのでかなわぬ恋であった。しかし陽子は俊介の便りを読むたびに、彼の仕事にはついて行けない自分を感じて、その事を打ち明けるため山の中まで訪ねて来るが、俊介のあまりの喜びようを見て話すことが出来ずに帰京した。ダムの工事は俊介が来てから一そう馬力をかけられたが、工事が早くすすむとそれだけ儲け損う篠原たちは、工事を遅延させるため、坑道爆破を企てた。信州という男が、金のためダイナマイトの仕掛を買って出た。しかし篠原に恨みを持つ権三の密告で俊介は危険を犯して坑道に入り、ダイナマイトの導火線を抜いた。信州は俊介の挺身をみて自分の非を悔い、爆発直前のダイナマイトにとびついて爆死した。俊介は重傷を負ったが、彼の全快する頃、村民の立退きも、この事件以来円滑に進んでいることを知った。しかし、茂吉老人は生まれた土地を愛する余り自殺してしまった。ダムの完成の日、陽子から別れの手紙を受取った。その手紙を焼いているところへリウが女らしく着飾って別れをいいに来た。九州の飯場へ働きに行くのだという。「僕も九州へ行こう」という俊介の言葉にリウの顔には明るい希望の光がさした。

本片改编自井上靖的同名历史小说。

With a price on his head, Ichi seeks tranquillity in a favorite village. Since his last visit, it has fallen prey to Boss Masagoro, the son of a merchant rumored to have stolen gold from the shogunate. The boss has hired Yojimbo as his hard-drinking enforcer, but Yojimbo is both a spy for the shogunate, trying to find the gold, and in love with the merchant's unwilling mistress, Umeno. Ichi hires on as the merchant's masseur and buys Umeno's freedom with his employer's own money. This embarrasses Yojimbo who withdraws from a pact with Ichi to stir up trouble between father and son and their gangs. As the two sides fight, Ichi finds the gold and sets up a final set of confrontations.

文久三年（1863年），新選組成立，当时局长为芹泽鸭。不久，以土方岁三、近藤勇等天然理心流剑士为中心的新選組骨干，以肃清组内败类为由，斩杀芹泽鸭，迫使新见锦切腹，并由近藤勇出任新選組局长，土方岁三出任副长。然后一番队队长为冲田总司、三番队队长为斋藤一。可以看出，新選組的中心力量都是天然理心流剑士。
元治元年（1864年）六月五日，长州藩维新志士在京都池田屋秘密集会。因为消息泄露，池田屋遭新選組袭击，除桂小五郎（即维新三杰之一的木户孝允）因故未到会外，大部分长州藩志士高层人物或被斩杀，或被捕。这就是震惊日本的“池田屋事件”。新選組一战成名。由于新選組本处地处京都壬生地区，因此被人们称为“壬生狼”。
庆应二年（1866年），在坂本龙马的努力下，历来相互仇视的萨摩藩跟长州藩同盟，维新力量日趋壮大。
庆应四年（1868）年，戊辰战争爆发。在维新军队的攻击下，幕府军节节溃败。四月，德川幕府末代将军德川庆喜将政权交还天皇。
戊辰战争后，新選組残部在土方岁三的带领下，向东北投奔会津藩，与其他佐幕军队一起，继续抵抗维新政府。但是，由于会津若松城战役的失败，新選組残部只得继续向北逃奔至北海道函馆。
明治二年（1869年），箱馆战争爆发。岁三独自骑马举刀突入敌阵，被步枪子弹贯穿胸部，战死。新選組正式结束。

A humble and simple Takezo abandons his life as a knight errant. He's sought as a teacher and vassal by Shogun, Japan's most powerful clan leader. He's also challenged to fight by the supremely confident and skillful Sasaki Kojiro. Takezo agrees to fight Kojiro in a year's time but rejects Shogun's patronage, choosing instead to live on the edge of a village, raising vegetables. He's followed there by Otsu and later by Akemi, both in love with him. The year ends as Takezo assists the villagers against a band of brigands. He seeks Otsu's forgiveness and accepts her love, then sets off across the water to Ganryu Island for his final contest.

长大后的加耶（泽口靖子 饰）风华绝代，贵族子弟纷纷前来求婚。加耶对偶然邂逅的大纳言（中井贵一 饰）情有独钟。为表诚心，求婚者需找来三件宝物作为聘礼，分别是：蓬莱宝树、火鼠皮衣和龙颈上的宝石。另两位贵族因作弊被取消资格，而大纳言却空手而归，险些丧命。
大纳言的勇敢深深打动加耶，这时来自月亮上的生物却要将加耶接回故土……
